Rarely have I read such an engaging book by William Boyd which charts his journey in life from 1920 onwards.

This is a new C4 drama starting this Sunday starring Jim Broadbent and should be absolutely superb.

I would strongly recommend you watch this and PM if you want to read the book.

At least this one is slightly more high brow than our usual fare.
Boyd did the adaptation for the programme, he said he's very happy with it, although naturally plenty had to be left out.

As much as I loved the book, and it has made an impact on me, I've never been able to recommend it on.
Every time someone asks to borrow a book, no matter what choice I give with it, the person will always take the 'other' book.

As it seems de rigeur to bounce threads these days however there is no self-promotion or vanity here:

This really does promise to be a superb drama and you really should read the book as well, a very engaging life story.

Less than half an hour to go............

Thought it was great, can't wait for next weeks episode.
Haven't read the book, but may have to after this. Will wait to the end of the series though.
I think Channel 4 are surpasing themesleves with drama at the moment, this and Pillars of the Earth have really stood out this year (interesting cross over of actors between the two as well.)

I loved the book and although I was looking forward to the TV adaptation it was with a certain amount of trepidation having seen good books being mauled by a film version in the past, if anyone read Trainspotting first the film left me flat. I was pleased with the first part last night, as Stat Brother has posted a lot has to be taken out but it still retained its character and style also the main love interest was very attractive!

I loved the 'feel' of it, right from the opening credits.
It's certainly nicely set up for the war years.

I'm a little curious about the timings as to why it couldn't have been 6-8 hourly slots.

I thought it was rather dull.
That's not overly surprising.
The book is a memoir and reading those early chapters, you're really getting a feel for Logan the man. Which then sets you up for the middle and end, of the book.

It would be interesting, if you stuck with it, whether the same principle applies.
Or if Boyd was originally right when he said it was the impossible adaptation.

I really enjoyed that episode, Wifey even perked up, she was a little damning last week.

Is it my memory playing tricks, or was the Civil War under played? I seem to remember it being a sizeable chunk in the book.
It did feel as if the 'hard work' from last week is seriously paying off, now.
