It really annoys me that our high street shops are advertising this coming Sunday as Mothers Day. They would be correct if we were all in America but to us in the UK it is Mothering Sunday always is and always will be. When I was a child we went to Sunday morning church and was given a posy of primroses and Bluebells to give to our mums. Now it is a comercialised way for florists, card shops and sweet shops to have a killing at inflated prices.

I believe it's "American semesters". They don't call them terms there...

It never has been called that in this country as it is listed in the religous calendar as Mothering Sunday. The Americans coined the phrase Mothers Day and imposed it on us.

Yep, but as danny boy said it's been commonly called mother's day for at least 50 years, get with the program(me) !

Just spent two weeks there and if I hear anyone else say AWESOME over the next few days I am likely to hit them, definitely a buzz word in the USA at the moment :angry:

That is my point it hasnt I am 66 and when I was a child and during my teen years it was always Mothering Sunday. I would say that it came about during the late 60s as it was then fashionable to be all American.

I bet 99% of people who open Christmas presents, eat Christmas dinner, really have no idea what they are meant to be celebrating either.

The answer to mothers day is not to take part in it. Just take some fresh flowers round to your mother when you next see her. People shouldnt have to buy a card to show that they love thier mums..

pffff.

Everything is commercialised. Deal with it.

this "blame America for everything (even really trivial things that only a complete twat would worry about)" attitude is getting very tiresome.

i really can't be arsed to form complete sentences on this subject so i'll sum up what i want to say in a few bullet points:

* i am English
* i live in the US
* i hate the 'stereotypical American' too
* and yes, there are a few 'stereotypical Americans' around and they are arseholes
* most people i know over here are nice, well educated, liberal types
* there are a lot of wankers and annoying traits from England too, you know
