Was thinking about Falmer etc, and it occurred to me what a different mentality Americans have when it comes to building sporting facilities.

Not just for the top teams- ie NFL, baseball etc, but for their college teams. These stadiums are university arenas, FFS, imagine what LDC would do if Sussex University announced they were planning to build one of THESE beauties across the road from the A27?


Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge (Louisiana State University), capacity 92,400

Sanford Stadium, Athens (Georgia State), capacity 92,058

Bryant Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, capacity 92,158

Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainseville, Florida (Florida Gators), capacity 88,548

This is my favourite though (this should be our new stadium name)

Some of the arenas for college football, are totally over the top.

Some more (I just can't believe the crowds they get for college sports). Most of these are bigger than the NFL arenas.

The (also a possible name for our new ground) Camp Randall Stadium, home to the less than intimidating Wisconsin Badgers, capacity 80k+

Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Indiana, 80k+

Clemson Memorial Stadium, South Carolina (I mean, who's ever HEARD of Clemson??), 80k+

Florida does appear to be rather well off for spactacular stadiums...

I mention this one because a few years back, some rich guy decides Jacksonville needs an NFL team, so builds this thing in the middle of the city (and it is, I've been there), in the HOPE of enticing an NFL franchise. Dammit, we can't even build a stadium WITH a team, and they get to build 75,000 seats in the middle of a city before they've even invented one...

Qwest Stadium, Seattle

This was built five years ago, because the franchise (Seattle Seahawks) owners decided the previous stadium, the famous Seattle Skydome, was too outdated. Needless to say, the city authorities were very supportive.

By the way, when I say "outdated"- the SkyDome was built in the 1960s....

My mate played college football for Ithaca and he said the same thing, if not bigger. He said the standard isn't far off the NFL, but the big difference is that the players are all hungry for success because they haven't made it yet. Even high school football gets crowds of a few thousand.

Capacity is only 60.000 for that one.

I think the coolest of all those is the doak campbell, it's proper old school and has a history, and it's made out of bricks and not mecano like the rest of them

Impressive though it is, I remain to be convinced that Wembley is the 8th Wonder of the World (as our FA would have you believe, at least thats how they'll try to justify the prices I suppose).
