at least that's another 3 points under the belt. but we'll have to wait for the lads to come back from the game to hear what they made of it.

Atmosphere?
Sounded on Southern FM like a bloody County League crowd ie one man and his dog.
Away matches...you can't beat them for atmosphere!!!

Just got back.

Pleased to get the three points - but we made really hard work of it. If we play like that against the bottom team the omens are not good for the season as a whole.

Plus points :
Leon's strike - well taken , but a bit of a slip by their centre half to let him in.
Flitney - competent debut - one dodgy moment when he dropped the ball but was cleared by Mayo on the line. His kicking was pretty good - but I would prefer to see Kuipers back for Sat.
Jones looked lively - quite creative, but he was our best player which worries me as for the last couple of years he could'nt get in the side.

Negative points :
Low crowd - Crap first half
WHY OH WHY ARE WE PLAYING SO MUCH LONG BALL STUFF AT THE MOMENT ? IS LEON REALLY 6FT 4IN ?

I'm trying to be positive - but if you were a neutral I think you would want your money back.

We must play better if we are to get anything from Sheffield Wednesday on Sat.

One request for SC - please get someone in more effective than Henderson, I just don't think he's up to it. Plus we desperately need a creative midfielder.

not as certain about Flitney, thought he failed to really command his area by not coming for crosses. Had little to do because Chesterfield were crap. First half we were not that good, for a twenty minute spell iafter the break I thought we played some decent football and could have scored two or three goals. Then we sat back and let them come at us. Teams with more effective forwards will punish us. Thought Knight played well, particularly after we scored, whilst Jones provided some link with midfield which we have been missing lately. During the 20 minute spell when we played well, Jones and Mayo linked up well down the left and got the ball forward to feet. Once we sit back we just revert to hoofing it.

Not bad we made some good chances in the second half and should have had more goals.

Well taken goal by the birthday boy, shame he made a complete tit of himself slipping over celebrating on the sand pit :p

Flitney got out of jail with one spill but the opposition were rubbish.

Need to play better on Saturday but that's another day.

On tonights performance, we are crying out for someone a bit 'different' in midfield. Roger, Oatway and Carpenter are all too alike, bog standard midfield grafters. Apart from a couple of indecisions, Flitney was ok. He was never really tested by Chesterfield though. They're not bottom of the league for no reason!

We tend to lift our performance agains't so called better teams. If we don't raise our game on saturday, we will get punished.

Its a sign of what a poor standard division two is this year. We've been fairly mediocre to poor this season, but are still in sixth position tonight.....

Flitney did OK apart from his brief worrying flap.
Good goal from Leon, had 2 players square to pass too but glad he chose the strikers instinct to go it alone.
Jonah...my god have we missed him, Mayo seemed a little more settled behind him but still missed something, Jonah did sometricks and passed well.
Henderson....go home! had enough of him now he aint gonna get better, he lacks pace and does'nt attack the ball enough.
Knight finally got the ball to feet alot more than recently and we looked much better when passing it around.
Last 15mins were dodgy, too much passing around our box but they were crap so it didnt matter in the end.

Overall an improvement on recent games, still not great but better and the 3 points are all that matter now...but we will have to lift our game for saturday.

Last word...that linesman's "Offside" decision when the ball never left our half...."CHISLA!" - Thanks to Artois, JohnnyBoyLennon and I think Fatboy for noticing my attack on said lino :lolol:

Just got back.

The games followed the recent pattern where we were poor, the opposition were as poor if not worse and we somehow manage to pick up points.

First half we were awful again. We weren’t closing down enough and we couldn’t seem to make a series of passes, with an overly large number of balls just hoofed aimlessly forwards. Second half was an improvement on the first half and we played better without ever really playing well. But as the game came to its conclusion we seemed to get increasingly nervy.

My man of the match today was Leon Knight, not just for his superbly taken winner, but also for his general awareness and passing ability not to mention some good crosses from the wing. Butters did alright as did Oatway. I thought Cullip improved as the game progressed. Rodger I thought was indifferent as was Mayo. Henderson did some good things but for the majority of the game gave away possession to easily and I didn’t think he carried enough threat on goal. The keeper did quite well, and did what was required and just had the one real mistake. But against a poor Chesterfield side it was hard to come to many conclusions about him.

Crowd were quiet. But the players didn’t do anything to excite them, and the ref didn’t really do anything contentious or annoy anyone. Everything about the game was lethargic. Despite a great goal, I thought the celebrations that followed were some of the shortest seen at Withdean. The small attendance though was partly down to Chesterfield only bringing a small mini bus load of fans.

Overall three more points, but we could have played a lot better.

Good to get the points, suppose that is all that matters. But our performances really do disappoint. We seem to be hoofing far to much.Is this how Coppell thinks we have to play to get out of this league,we played so much better football last season against better opposition. Is it a case of just get the result and forget playing football ? Why are we not looking confident ? How long has Charlie been our main playmaker and dead ball specialist ?
Is he dictating the play to much ? He is a great tackler and player to distroy the opposition but he is not creative. Is this what we have to put up with for the rest of the season ? The win / points mean more then the performances.
The crowd were very poor tonight very quiet and the moaning started very early. One minute having a go at the back four for hoofing and then moaning because they are trying to play the ball out of trouble, can't have it both ways.Still 6th and we haven't played well all season.
I would be happy to get 3 points Saturday and play s**t again.
