In the shadow of Seaford Head
This is from the Health & Safety Executive's website

The construction site of Brighton & Hove Albion’s new football stadium in Falmer is scoring well with the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) new hard-hitting campaign - Shattered Lives.
The Shattered Lives campaign, aims to reduce the number of slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace, which, in Brighton & Hove, have caused 57 major injuries to employees and cost one person their life last year. These latest statistics also show that 120 people in the area had to take more than three days off work due to an injury caused by a slip, trip or fall.

Today (4 February) HSE inspectors and the construction company, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, gave a tour of the stadium’s East Stand, including its three floors and roof area. The company highlighted the simple steps it has taken to prevent slips, trips and falls from height. This has included gritting surfaces due to recent cold weather, adding in extra lighting for clear visibility, and clearing up debris and materials as a priority.

Russell Adfield, HSE Principal Inspector for Sussex, said:

“The construction industry has made great improvements in health and safety standards over the last 10 years which is to be welcomed. However, there is no room for complacency and continued effort needs to be made to ensure staff are properly trained and competent, that suitable safety equipment is provided and properly used, work practices are properly designed and supervised and that managers and directors lead by example.

“Workers, families and communities all pay the price for deaths and injuries at work. Added to this, the economic implications are huge, from families losing income to the impact it has on a business’s productivity, which in turn can affect the wider community. Also, with the possible civil, criminal and social support costs that follow serious incidents, it is clear to see that the whole of society loses out.

“Historically there has been an acceptance that death and injury are part and parcel of the construction industry. That culture is thankfully shifting and workers are being better protected because of it. HSE supports industry by providing a host of free advice and guidance material on website and we urge all directors, managers and workers to take the opportunity to build on the successes of recent years.”

Adrian Stammers, Group Health Safety Environment and Quality Manager at Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, said:

“Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd is always happy to work with the Health and Safety Executive to keep our sites safe. We are delighted to support the HSE in promoting the awareness of slips, trips and falls through their Shattered Lives initiative.

“We are very conscious of the fact that most accidents that occur on construction sites can be directly related to slips, trips and falls. Safety is our top priority. Quite simply our main objective is to send our site workers home in the same condition they arrived on site - alive and well.

“We do all we can through training and coaching to make our workers aware of the hazards and work with them to ensure that they understand the safe preventative measures that are to be implemented.”

HSE estimates that the combined financial costs incurred by society as a whole from preventable slips, trips and falls around £800 million a year, at a time when both businesses and individuals are struggling financially following the recent recession.

The Shattered Lives campaign involves raising awareness of the impact of slips, trips and falls in the workplace and directs people to the new website (HSE - Shattered Lives) for practical advice and guidance.

The campaign is targeted at those sectors where there is high number of slips, trips and falls accidents each year, specifically, health and social care, education, food manufacturing, food retail, catering and hospitality, building and plant maintenance, and construction.

On the new campaign website, people will be able to find out information on how they can easily, and cost effectively, reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls in the workplace, and see what other organisations, such as Sainsbury’s and First Line Digital, have done. Included on the site is an online tool (STEP) and a work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT). Advice ranges from how to deal with spills and other slip risks, to the importance of using ladders correctly to reduce the risk of falling from height.

Wizard,

I bet you would be well pissed off if your boyfriend was injured on the site!

You’re obviously a Palace fan on a wind up either that or some sad c**t with nothing better to do than check for Health and safety breaches on our webcam.

This is excellent and the way it should be done and I applored BHA & Buckingham Group for their efforts

But and it is a big but ... The camera never lies

(The following is not directed directly at The Oldman)

Is deep bases without any edge protection acceptable ?
People climbing out of MEWPS acceptable ?

Is it not better to let the club know by forums like this .... Yes we all know they view it than to make official complaints via the HSE

One Question
Have any of you that have had a pop at the safety posts today actually worked on a big construction project and understand the processes ...or are you just worried that the photo's will be stopped

Must go got a site to run

I1m not which is more of an insult being called a c**t or being accused on being a Palace fan.

I’m not sure what is worse, deciding to pursue a career in health and safety OR spending your spare time pointing out breaches of health and safety on an internet forum.

I bet you’re a right laugh on a night out, sad f***.

At the end of the day! give or take the piss taking the main point appears to be saving someone from injury or even a fatality! Surely that deserves the attention of the right people at the club?
