Great keepers regard Banks' save v Pele as the best ever (as does Pele himself)

GB had only just shifted from the left side to the right side of goal, so he had some way to go to stop it. That it bounced first, and he flipped it over the bar illustrated the difficulty of a move that took place in that brief instant.
A bit sad to know that one of those sharp eyes was lost to a car accident, but recalling Banksie, he made incredible saves all the time - this was just seen as the 'impossible' save.

By far the best keeper in England, and apart from Casillas properly in the world, and still very young for a keeper.

Paul Cooper, very consistent performer and a penalty-saving expert. One of the greatest English goalies never to have played for his country. Would have been an automatic choice nowadays.

Surprised this fella hasn't been mentioned yet.

Granted he was ropey towards the end of his career & the least said about his mid life crisis pony tail the better. But boy what a quality keeper he was.
See a lot of him in Joe Hart.

Anyone who watches football can see that Reina is an extremely overrated keeper. Has good shot stopping ability and good at one on ones but terrible at crosses. Prone to a cock-up as well it seems. Best keepers in the world? Casillas, Buffon and FDM.

Good shout. It is amazing to think how many good keepers we had in those days. Shilton and Clemence shared England duties which froze out the likes of the penalty king Paul Cooper and the equally brilliant Joe Corrigan. All four would have walked into the England side ever since David Seaman retired.

Gordon Banks was a PHENOMENON, he was the apex of brilliance.

And all he got then was a pat on the head, and a smack on the bott from Mooreo. Nowadays he'd be mobbed for a save like that. Those were REAL MEN...

Plus the season after (I think) playing for Stoke in a Cup game he saved a penalty taken by Geoff Hurst. Don't know if the cameras were there though, but the newspaper reports said it was top-drawer. And we know hursty could hit them.
