Prior injures hand in warm up, could be Colly or if England bat will they fly in Ambrose who is at Edgbaston.

Prior news Collingwood's warming up with the gloves. No confirmed news yet. This is what he looks like with gloves on - he did it earlier this year against West Indies at Chester-le-Street.

Australia news "Four quicks," Miller says. "Hauritz has the catcher's mitt on." Sheesh. What a morning this is.

Prior news He's still being treated by the medical staff, the ECB say. Tim Ambrose is playing at Edgbaston this morning - will he be flown in? It's 125 miles from Edgbaston to Headingley, and play is only 50 minutes away. If England bat, they may be able to get him over.

Clark news Clark is definitely playing, says our man with his ear to the ground, Alex Brown.

Prior news it's not looking good. He's damaged his hand, we think, and Collingwood's - yes, Paul Collingwood - has been warming up with the gloves. He did it on a temporary basis earlier this year, much to his obvious amusement and enjoyment - but this is an Ashes Test, ergo the pressure is considerably higher.

"Lots of pats of the back for Stuart Clark," spots Andrew Miller, one of three Cricinfo guys at the ground. "And Matt Prior has just been taken off the field, looking injured. Trying to find out more. Looks like he might have damaged his shoulder doing a stretching exercise." And all this, after England were evacuated from their hotel at 5am owing to a fire alarm. What a morning. "No sign of Brett Lee on the field at all, by the way," Miller continues. "Might be trouble at t'mill in both camps." Certainly sounds like it. Fifty-five minutes until the start, and plenty and plenty and plenty to discuss.

So far Prior has injured his shoulder, hand and back.

Cricinfo now confirm its his back - injured in the pre warmup game of footy :nono:

Latest:

Prior's back and he's got his gloves on! This merry-go-round continues. Not sure what they've done to him, and he looks a bit tentative - so I imagine he has a couple of minutes to prove his fitness for a series-deciding Test match. What a total maelstrom of madness.

10.32am Prior has been passed fit. Drama over. Until he breaks down mid-Test, of course. He doesn't look very fit to me - very, very ginger.

Toss: Strauss flicks, Ponting calls heads and it's a tail - and England are batting. "Looks a good wicket to me," says Strauss.

SWEET. Thank f*** or that.

England team news Harmison is in for Flintoff. Broad's playing. Prior's playing. Trott isn't. Full lineup shortly, before which we have the toss.

So

Cook
Strauss
Bopara
Bell
Colly
Prior
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Onions
Harmison

Decent side i reckon. Bopara needs to contribute though.

I'm glad we've gone with 5 bowlers because I was worried we'd go in with 6 batsmen.

The bottom line is we need to win 1 test match out of 2 to regain the Ashes, so be positive in both matches.

Strauss has made a bold call to bat - the 5 day forecast says there's a 60% chance of rain and lots of cloud cover today, but sunny tomorrow. I hope the decision wasn't taken because of Prior's injury. Hmmm...

We really need the top 6 to stand up now and be counted; can't be relying on Broad at 7 for runs (although he may get some).

Interesting to see that the Aussies haven't got a specialist spinner. Not playing Hauritz, and then saying North can do a job is putting serious place on North; they obviously don't think that the wicket will spin, so asking your part-timer to have a go seems a bit harsh!

I'm sure that it was. However, I think that England want to try to keep the momentum, and are wary of inserting a strong and relatively on-form Australian batting line up. They don't want an Edgbaston 2005 scenario where Australia are 120-0 or similar at lunch...

We can draw them both

Headingley is a result pitch - only 1 draw there in the last 11 test matches. And the Aussies haven't beaten us at The Oval in the Ashes since 1972.

2 draws is not likely, so not worth contemplating.

You can bat yourself out of a test match on Day 1, but you rarely bowl yourself out of it.
