The same Dutch team that got humiliated 4-1 and were utter drivel against a very average England team?

FLAIR does not constitute consistant quality.

frankly, some of those teams should not be in there because they were too good and never shot themselves in the foot or or in fact shot anybody*

* is columbia 94 in there? if not, we've missed something special.

The rascial tension at the start of the tournement with edgar davids and several of the other black players.

the fact by scoring against england in there 4-1 defeat they knocked out Scotland!

and the fact they failed so misrable in the tournement itself.

It is going to be a final showdown
Brazil 1970 vs Cameroon 1990

I can feel it in my bones, and it's going to be EPIC
My thoughts PRECISELY.

And look, I see a pattern: World Cup year ending in zero = FLAIR outfit

Surely 2010 will see the dawn of a new FLAIR side. Ivory Coast? Algeria? New Zealand featuring Rory Fallon?

But for shooting themselves in the foot the 1990 Dutch team outshone that. Out of the 8 or 9 finals tournaments I've had the pleasure of watching them self-destruct in since I moved here, that was by far the most satisfying.

* Before the tournament, the were nailed on favourites, coming in as deserved European Champions with Gullitt, van Basten and Rijkaard.

* Everyone here was utterly convinced they were going to win (a lesson many have learned since, to be fair).

* The Dutch post office were so convinced of it they printed 40 million stamps to commemorate the famous victory (and then had to burn them afterwards).

* And then they failed to beat Egypt.

* And then we battered them 0-0, featuring Gullitt going arse over tit for no reason at one point.

* And then they failed to beat Ireland and had to draw lots with them to go through.

* And then there was the Germany game, and Rijkaard's gob.

* And then you could here a pin drop in my street for hours after the final whistle, and the only sound to be heard was orange balloons slowly deflating.

* Then 2 days later came Davit Platt's goal that put us into the QFs...

Just thought of a cracker that's not in it - Denmark 1986.

Orchestrated by Michael Laudrup, Jesper Olsen and Jan Molby, they were so FLAIR that they swept all and sundry aside in the group stage (including a drubbing of Uruguay and a 2-0 win against eventual runners-up West Germany), and then completely forgot how to defend in their second round game thumping by the Spanish.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Also, not that it makes much of a difference either, but I'm pretty sure the free-kick mavericks of Zaire starred in either '74 or '78 if it matters.
