I think most of you are missing the point. It isn't about how offended we are to be called gay, it is about the fact that something that some people happen to be (in this case, gay) is used as an insult. It is borne out of a negative attitude to one section of society, maintaining the impression that they are somehow a less equal part of the community. It is just the same as racism in the way it promotes intolerance and hatred.

No. It's banter. When we sing "You dirty northern bastards" or "You fat bastard" or similar, we are using the fact that someone is fat or northern (both negative in my opinion) as an insult. Is this borne out of a negative attitude to one (or two) sections of society, maintaining the impression that they are somehow a less equal part of the community?

YES, of course it is! So what?

Are you saying we should not be able to sing "Who ate all the pies" anymore?

There is a massive difference between fans singing gay / pikey / inbred / sheep-shagging taunts to, for example, making monkey noises etc.

Or isn't there?

I wasn't at the match in question, although a couple of the reports I've read of this today say that these two had been spoken to before being escorted out. In a group of fans singing "Do you take it up the arse?" it's banter, although possibly if it is two blokes by themselves, foaming at the mouth and trying to be nasty with it I can see why the police or stewards might of taken action. You hear 99% of footballers and refs say when there is 100's or 1000's of people hurling abuse it's easy to block out and laugh it off, it's always the individual comments from the touchline that tend to cause the most upset. As I say I wasn't at the match in question so can't comment, just putting my view across. And no I don't give a shit about the gay taunts, the respones are good, it's individual to our club so it means people have heard of us and we're not just lumped in with "dirty northern bastards" etc

..........................................

Would this be an insult to a group of African lads "You're black and you know you are"?

Which is akas "You'ee Welsh and "You're gay?

There is no worse insult than being called a faggot, which is why I get so angry when fans sing it to us.

Many of you seem to forget that a big part of football is
gaining one upmanship.

All 'insults'are fair game in order to get supremacy over the other side.

All is fair in love and war and inter team footballing insults.

TWO Norwich City football fans have become the first to be convicted of homophobic chants.

James Monkhouse, 28, and Michael Church, 24, shouted “queer” taunts at Brighton supporters at a game last February.

But they escaped a match ban after telling Norwich JPs they were responding to jibes that their team’s East Anglian home was “full of inbreds”.

Insurance broker Monkhouse and engineer Church received conditional discharges and paid £200 costs after being convicted of disorderly behaviour.

They both told JPs their chants were part of “football banter” and did not think “queer” was derogatory, insisting they had gay pals.

The court heard police had warned the pair on their behaviour previously but did not consider them hooligans

Jesus, what a waste of time / money.
