    UK trips away

That’s encouraging. I have two bookings over Easter, as mentioned above - a hotel and then a caravan. Both direct with the operator, and both fully paid upfront. Both are saying I can’t have a refund, I can only rebook within 2020 (and if the dates I want cost more, I have to pay the extra too)...

    Trump

I'd be more than happy for Trump and all his acolytes to pile into a packed church on Easter Sunday, and personally shake hands with and embrace every single member of a huge congregation.

How long is it since you left the house?

I’ve only been out on one day in the last 8. Otherwise been inside the whole time. Saturday was a relief; went to the supermarket and got enough in supplies to not have to go for another 14 days. Then drove out to Al Qudra, where you can start to get a bit of desert on the outskirts of...

The Great Empty - awesome photos

Probably somewhere where the beauty is normally spoilt by crowds. Machu Pichu springs to mind. Have always wanted to go, but fear it would be permanently overrun with people and nothing like the evocative images. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anyone Happy To Admit To Panic Buying/Stockpiling?

Over the past few weeks, there have been many scientific terms I've not quite understood, and several ways of analysing data that I've struggled to get to grips with. But nothing – nothing – has left me quite so completely baffled as this sentence. I genuinely do not have a clue what you're...

    [Misc] Just the Diehards Left?

It truly wasn’t. Honestly. Go back a few years and I swear there was virtually no politics on here at all. Now almost every single thread seems to end up in pointless repetition of entrenched views. I don’t really know why, though maybe it’s symptomatic of the wider world we now live in - Trump...

Main Coronavirus / Covid-19 Discussion Thread

UK death toll up 54 today, so - like yesterday - not as bad as feared, and a growing possibility we might be ducking under the Italy/Spain trajectory. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Main Coronavirus / Covid-19 Discussion Thread

UK death total up to 281, a rise of 47. In the scheme of things, and especially comparing our tracking against Italy and Spain, that's a note of encouragement. If it's sustained for the next two or three days, then that's a ray of hope. Not, of course, for those who have lost loved ones in...

Emirates grounding its entire fleet from Wednesday. No flights anywhere. Looks like I’ll be stuck in Dubai. Unless I find a yacht I can sail home. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    [News] Bit of good news

Fantastic. Means evening games kick off at 10:45 rather than 11:45 for us Dubai expats, that extra hour makes a world of difference. Oh. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

[News] The Coronavirus Good News thread

Dave Beasant's son (who, randomly enough, is my FX trader) just got me an incredible deal on my monthly AED to GBP transfer. Several hundred £ better than usual. Top man!

[TV] The Last Man on Earth

Did anyone else ever watch this? Or just me?! It was a 4-series comedy on US tv, started screening about 4/5 years ago now I think. Set in a future world where a virus has wiped out the population. I really enjoyed it, though it is pretty weird at times. It’s been on mind a lot over the last...

    [Finance] Housing Market

I truly hope not. House prices are ludicrously high, and the increasingly desperate scramble to dedicate obscene amounts of one's income (and life) towards a mortgage has not, in my opinion, been a healthy trajectory for society over the past 20 odd years. I'd rather that when we do emerge...

    [Travel] Partners stuck overseas

Thanks Darren*– I wish! Trouble is, I'd then exceed the 90 days I'm allowed in the UK each tax year. Which could suddenly make my entire 2019-20 tax-free Dubai salary liable for UK 40% income tax! Not a possibility I want to risk – arguably these are exceptional circumstances that should make...

    [Travel] Partners stuck overseas

Holding my breath until next Monday. If travel is still possible at that point, I can then fly back to the UK to be with my family. Otherwise will be stuck in Dubai.

    UK trips away

Likewise. We have a couple of nights in a Bath hotel and then a caravan in Devon for the Easter holidays. Both fully-paid for upfront. Not sure what will happen now.
