[Albion] Cameron Peupion

Once Dolphin, Now Seagull
Difficult if you are on loan to a rubbish side that dont know how to get the best out of you. I think it’s difficult to judge until you see them playing with a team whose system you fit into. Obviously we try and send them to the right clubs to mitigate this but it wont always be the case. I assume our scouts will know what they are looking for when they go and see them play when on loan so best to trust the club in their decisions

Ayari will end up a championship player at best IMO

Very pleased to be proven wrong but normally can spot these things pretty early.

He certainly needs another loan to impress and learn somewhere
It will be interesting.
I think most of us feel we can spot these things 😃, and you may well be right that a loan might be the best option. So far FH has ‘trusted’ him enough to bring him on in both PL games, so he must see something.

I quite like him.

Peupion was our worst player last season, even including Baker-Boaitey. Obviously, the standard now is unbelievably high, but inevitably there has to be a worst player. And it's Peupion. I am stunned he's been given minutes again but it must be a reflection on his attitude in training, his performances in the sessions and his standing with the coaching staff. At this point, I don't want to see him near the first team squad but he might benefit from regular PL2 football.
Peupion has now been given first team football by Potter, De Zerbi AND Hurzeler.

Clearly he has something that makes him interesting, though I can't really tell what it is. Struggle to see him making it for Brighton, but if all of those three think he is good enough to be around the first team, it would suggest he'll end up on a rather high level.

Maybe he will surprise us all and be a Gyokeres. But I suspect he will be a Shamir Fenelon (no insights on whether he'll change his name or not though).

Well, don't see Peupion doing the winger equivalent of scoring 30+ goals in Portugal. But I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a decent big 5 league player.

Did anyone who thinks “they can just tell” about the young players and their prospects, predict Gyokeres’s progress?
Thought not.
Crucially, Gyokeres predicted his progress. If Peupion has the same attitude/work rate/ability then he'll be fine. That's the X Factor. Right now he looks absolutely useless but nobody knows for certain whether he'll progress because nobody is pretending to know about the lad.

Honestly, I reckon Peupion will end up back in Oz never to be heard of again.
But full disclosure i watched Gyokeres several times and thought there was no way he’d make it at championship level. There was nothing there, I thought.
I guess you can never 100% tell, and like you say he probably has a lot of self belief.

That's where I am. I haven't seen anything special from him but those really in the know obviously feel he has something

He appears to have an eye for making goals

I said he'd turn into a player for "one of the big five leagues but maybe not PL". Not so much based on his appearances for Brighton, but because he is a super professional with a lot of confidence, and those usually make their way to the top.

Agree - Ayari ran about a lot and didnt impress for me. Seems my view and our new manager's are different, and he is probably the better judge!!

I said when I started this thread in 2023 (which was weirdly merged under your 2020 post announcing his move from Oz!) that he would debut/have match time with the first team last year. 😉 It was obvious to me what qualities he had by watching him play for the U’s but it’s a big step up in terms of pace and intensity from PL2 to the PL as we know.
Three managers (Potter, RDZ and FB) as did Lallana, have now seen his potential (not just in his ‘professionalism’ and commitment but in his football too) and given him time with the first team. (I thought he did ok in Roma btw). His loan to Cheltenham was an abject failure - not least because I think he’s better than 3rd tier football but also Clarke’s changes to Cheltenham after Elliot was sacked, basically froze Peupion out of the starting line ups. It was also a great shame RDZ didn’t release him for the Olympic call up too with the Olyroos - because he was needed to help cover injuries for us at the end of last season - that also would have been great experience.

He’d perhaps benefit from another loan (maybe to Celtic?) or at least one of the European leagues that could toughen/bulk him up a bit.

Not given up on him yet but he’s now 21 so this season could be career defining.

The level is SO very high though. Not a chance for me, that Weir can make it at this level. He's a long way short of Marc Leonard, for example - and he didn't.

Weir's 22 years old - less than a year younger than O'Riley and Gilmour, and much older than Hinshelwood, Ayari and Baleba.

I guess the club's Technical Director rates him though.
Well, there you go.

I rather get Fati back for another season under Fab.
Seriously

I wouldn’t. Complete waste of money through no real fault of Fati..

I would rather we sent Peupion out on loan for another season to a decent Club that is actually going to use him then see where we are with him at the end of the season.

Some players are late developers - but they all need to play regular football under a supportive manager whilst on loan which Peupion didn’t have last season at Cheltenham.
