Nobody stirred anything. I did a qucik google and found a figure of 1.4m claiming pension credit. If it should have been 2.2m then it's 1 in 6 pensioners who will get it. Approximately.

Both the Telegraph and hyperbole merchants Sky report that only “1.5m will be eligible”, 10m now missing out.

The key there is "entitled". Many don't realise they are entitled so don't claim pension credit so won't get the heating allowance. It needs publicity to encourage claims from those who should get it but don't.
If only there were a place where young relatives of the impoverished elderly could get some information. Alas.

Oh, hang on....

Not all impoverished pensioners are entitled to claim, which has been pointed out a number of times on this thread equally not all older people have young relatives to help them claim. Those just a couple of pounds a week over the limit get nothing but for them the winter fuel payment was a lifeline. They really will have to choose between heat or eat this winter especially with the still very high cost of both. Maybe you just care or maybe you just don't know people like this.

I have discussed this passim. I agree that a threshold where being above is like crossing the rubicon is a real problem for people who have crossed the rubicon and lost their entire winter fuel payment.

I have also argued that if it is cheaper to make a benefit universal because it saves on admin costs then it is better to make it universal. This is how the OAP works, albeit even this is calculated (based on lifetime earnings) and the OAP is not a benefit since it is based on earned income.

Thus I can only assume that making the WFA means tested will save lots of money.

Do you know anyone who will go from full WFA to no WFA. Do you know their full financial circumstances? Are you sure they will lose the entitlement or is it possible that they simply don't know how to navigate the benefits system?

If you know someone who will lose their WFA entitlement but could get it back by making the right claims online, why not help them do it? One of my neighbours is over 80 and struggles with all this sort of business and Mrs T has bailed him out on several occasions. Come to think of it, the next door neighbour, who is also over 80, has also been helped by Mrs T over techno stuff.

So, yes. Community. If you know someone who will have to give up heating or food because they will lose their automatic WFA, why not offer them some help with sorting out their claims?

Over 700 migrants arrived in 11 boats yesterday, good to see Starmer's heavy clamping down on the gangs is working.

Source?

You do realise he’s only been in power a few weeks.

Get a bloody grip. Stop panicking like a little girly who’s wet her knickers.

It’s a huge problem to solve made all the more difficult by 14 years of deliberate Tory sabotage .

Grow up, calm down, and start behaving like an adult . The years of silly, populist rule are over. The grown ups are here now. Act accordingly.

He's been in the job just over a month!!

Like him or loathe him, I think it might be a bit of a stretch to expect him to solve that problem that quickly.

Starmer's clamping down on the gangs was never anything more than political verbiage. The authorities are already trying to clamp down on the gangs, always have been, though with how much success we don't really know.

If and when Starmer directs specific extra spending on the immigration gangs, then perhaps we will see results.

Yeah, really, they are still coming, surprise surprise, height of the summer, queuing up on the French coast waiting in hiding for the smugglers to get them onto a boat so they can evade border security agencies - as they had been coming under the Tories - I guess spending £300 m on a scheme to send them to Rwanda would have stopped them, if only Starmer hadn’t aborted it.

The best strategy is indeed to smash the boat gangs, strengthen border security, work more closely with Europe and reform the asylum system - wonder why the Labour Government haven’t implemented all of that yet, they’ve been in power for nearly 6 weeks fhs.

He and Cooper have had a long time to get their heads around the problem, with Starmer thick with detail, Id like to think they would have been out of the traps pretty quickly.

How long do you think we should give him?

The theory about Rwanda is that these immigrants (who remember are coming from France, not a third world dictatorship) wouldn't want to come if they thought they might be sent off to Rwanda. Which may or may not have worked, we will never know. (It worked for Australia.)

I believe it would of worked and was already taking effect, cue Starmer to destroy the investment over night without delay. A smart person would have let it run a few months more, but he wanted to play politics, yet he comes out with bull about "country first, party second".

How long do you think we should give Cooper and Starmer to smash the gangs?

Please spare 12 minutes to watch Alex Phillips 😍 it's worth it.

She puts 4 million voters views across, particularly mine, so much better than I can in words.

What a load of shit. Plenty of whipping up the left under the Tories not that long ago

Did you watch it all? as you responded in just 5 mins.

She has put across very fair points, like I say most reform voters feel. Starmer needs to fix his language fast. I wonder why his popularity has plummeted? It's not rocket science.

For the record I didn't vote last time, as I underestimated reforms popularity, I know many who done the same and who will put their X next to Reform next time around. Reform is now the real working class party of the UK.

I watched some of it and stopped when she said you didn’t hear phrases like lefty scum being used in the past. You did from the last government. Load of bollocks like said. Exactly what you’d expect from TalkTv

Ah Talk TV. Yet another right-wing media channel.

I honestly believe that if all sides were fairly represented in the media, the right-wing in this country would be toast.

I think reversing it was as much to do with simple humanity and the desire not to continue with an illegal provision, so the financial 'investment' as you put it wasn't really a factor. It was also a manifesto commitment.
