I refer to the positions from which, say, Palmer and Saka scored. Must have made the tikka-takka favouring managers go cold when they could have passed it sideways to a team-mate and kept possession - and I think you knew that's what I meant, because I'm pretty sure you're not one of the dafter posters on here..........

While I am critical of Southgateball on the pitch I also recognise that he has done an awful lot right with England during his time.
I wonder if it is possible to get a head coach in to do the on field stuff while Southgate takes a more 'managerial' role to continue his good work.

Not much difference to Southgate underachieving
No doubt it was a woeful performance, but how much can we blame GS for the team not being able to string two passes together without giving the ball away. I felt for Pickford he had a choice of banging the ball up the pitch and watch Spain bring it back down, or pass it out to his team and watch Spain get hold of it even sooner.

What has he done off the pitch, who says that any of these are his doing, there is a big team behind the scenes, maybe others initiated any positives you refer to.
Surely he has oversight as coach though?
There was a clear north/south divide between players previously.
(Not that I want him to stay in any capacity).

Potter needs to avoid the England job for the sake of his mental health, he would get ripped to shreds.
Unless England win a tournament the new manager will be on a hiding to nothing.
It won't take The Sun and TalkSport long to forget how uninspiring and defensive Southgate's football was. There will soon be a clamour for his return.
Potter doesn't have the personality to engage with the ex-pro media influencers to survive that, his life would be hell whenever England failed to win.
He would need to multiply his Chelsea pressure by at least ten fold to understand how unhappy he will be.
He needs to take a job at an underachieving large club with a decent academy.
If in England somewhere like Sunderland, Bristol City, Leeds, Southampton, Fulham, West Brom.
But if I were him, for the sake of my family I would look towards a club in the Bundesliga.
Germany is a wonderful country and their football fans are very knowledgable.

There was that particularly horrible phase of play just after we’d equalised and had a throw adjacent to the box but Walker launched it all the way back to Stones on halfway. This was bad enough but Stones then passed off to Pickford who ignored Shaw, who was open enough on the left have been able to keep some sort of attack going, ans instead did his Peter Kay ‘Av it!!’ resulting in a Spanish goal kick.
At that point the Gods of football just looked down, shook their heads and said ‘not today guys’. I don’t think we saw the ball much after that point. Much as Pickford is able to make great saves, it really brought home the disadvantage of having a keeper whose first instinct is to clear it as far as possible.
Pickford is fine with the ball at his feet, he's no Ederson, but he's not as woeful as we saw over the past month.
I think Southgates instructions are to not take unneeded risks.
I disagree. If England played well but were beaten in a final I do not think many would complain. It's more the limp and lucky way England perform at the moment which is the issue. Anyone with an ounce of football knowledge knows Southgate lucked his way to finals. If England were genuine contenders I do not think many would moan.
100% agree. Many German contacts say supporters had no complaints about the Germans performances. Had a tough draw but always felt were giving it a go.
Many of these young English players will be available for next tournament. They all play for clubs that play on front foot and am sure they and supporters just want the approach at National level to be the same

Obviously a planned FA summit meeting this week, probably Weds or Thurs to allow for personal logistics.... I suspect we will know one way or another by Friday.
Sorry he is. Having seen him 10 or so times live he little to no control over the ball, it’s a hoof.
I would not be suprised if there's a job for him elsewhere in the FA. He has some value, just not selecting players and chosing tactics.
As I said yesterday, in ten years players have moved away from 'club first' mentality when at England camp. Southgate has been pushing against an open door in that respect.
