Cruel to be Kind/Girls Talk and many others just always seem to have been under the Radar and if so why is that ? For myself cracking players and would have liked to see them play a smallish venue ,have you ?

Love The Brinsleys one of my faves
I saw Brinsley Schwartz (with Nick Lowe) supporting Ace at Hove Town Hall in around 75.
The Stiffs live tour at the Top Rank had Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe as the opening act, but they did have to fit Elvis Costello and Ian Drury onto the bill as well. You could see brilliant bands at pubs all round the South East back in the day.

I saw that gig (and again at Drury Lane): Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Wreckless Eric and The New Rockets, Nick Lowe's Last Chicken in the Shop, and Larry Wallis's Psychedelic Rowdies

I saw them at Sussex University about the same time. Not impressed
Left with some mates and watched Animal Farm at a flat in Brighton, equally unimpressed.

The album Party Of One by NL is very good indeed. Great blues with at the time hugely poingnant lyrics.
Just not cool, perhaps? That seemed to be the fate of quite a few Birmingham? Black Country bands: Roy Wood - good guitarist, just about OK singer, always looked a bit of a clown; Moody Blues - oved their music, but they so looked lied a bunch of nice young men, cravats, ties, smart shirts - not your average typical rock band; Jeff Lynne - held up by many as an excellent musician, but was he ever that exciting, dynamic? Dave and Nick - probably in the same boat (though Jesus of Cool was an amazing album); Uriah Heap, heavy, but frequently objects of derision from anybody not actually a fan.
There were exceptions, of course - Black Sabbath and Led Zep immediately come to mind.
Perhaps the answer is it's just very difficult to be a Brummie and cool!

Roy Wood - just about OK ? His songwriting and vocals with The Move, ELO and Wizzard may prove differently and you've forgotten Denny Laine completely
And just to round off with the actual subjects of the thread, Nick Lowe is from Surrey and Dave Edmunds is welsh. All round, a superb analysis

I saw Rockpile in October 1980. Me and Mrs Earle got married and after a short honeymoon (all we could afford) we went to Norwich where my best man lived, and saw the band at the Uni. Nick Lowe less so, but Edmunds has always been a favourite from Zorba's Dance, especially his first solo album and then his great run of solo albums that followed [apart from Information!) and the eponymous band album.
All round spot on nit-picking, plus including opinions and facts as if they're of the same value. Typical.Roy Wood - just about OK ? His songwriting and vocals with The Move, ELO and Wizzard may prove differently and you've forgotten Denny Laine completely
