The general standard of the whole world cup was pretty poor. To be honest on one really stood out for me.

I'd award the golden ball to Klinsmann for actually getting his team to play some attacking football.

What about having a manager of the tournament? I would definate give it to Lippi for getting the Italians to attack - what a job!

At the foot of the downs
""Herren said Fifa would decide whether Zidane will be punished for his vicious headbutt on Materazzi.

"It is up to the disciplinary committee to decide what kind of sanction that would be," he added. ""

I bet he gets a 2 match ban !!

Same here, he had an unbelievable tournament.

He had a good tournament but not great, as did ZZ, the rest were crap as was the tournament as a whole. Very disappointing. Fabio Cannavaro was at fault for the penalty and Malouda gave him a real hard time, but I would still have gone for Cannavaro.
The WC has been a real let down. :(

Surely it was Materazzi who was at fault for the penalty? ???

Zidane is the commentators' equivalent of Brazil.

Historically, both have been responsible for moments of breathtaking skill and brilliance, and are well loved figures in the game.

But that doesn't mean that every time they shovel out a crap, half arsed performance, all the TV panels have to kneel before them and seek out only the good things while reeling out 4 year old clips of genius.

Zidane, like Brazil, had poor performances in this World Cup, but the likes of Gabby Logan, Andy Townsend and even the BBC panel just couldn't help falling over themselves to wallow in their past glories.

Summed it up for me when they chose to show the utterly meaningless Brazil v Japan game on BBC1 over the potentially explosive Croatia v Australia match, which was shunted to BBC3 or some such obscure channel. Then tried to justify this by creaming themselves over the sentimentality of fat boy Ronaldo scoring, and the skills of Kaka, Ronaldinho (who did nothing all tournament) etc cruising to an easy win against one of the competition's worst teams.

Meanwhile, over in the wilderness of BBC3 land, Australia and Croatia are scrapping ferociously with each other in a see-saw game with massive implications for each side, huge historical links between the two teams and controversy galore. Which we see the last five minutes of on BBC1, and that was only because of Graham Poll's aberration.

They must think all football fans are just plastic, Johnny Come Latelys who only catch a game every four years. Patronising in the extreme.

All so true Edna.

The moment that summed it up for me was a Zidane moment, in their last 16 game. I think it was ITV and therefore Tyldesley who reacted to a moment where Zidane miscontrolled a ball and it went out of play with ...

"Zidane miscontrols a pass. Well that is a collector's item, I'm struggling to remember the last time that happened."

(2), Cannavaro has been immense this tournament. Its shocking that ZZ plays 2 good games and wins it. Gattuso for me was amazing as well.

Ah well we know defenders never win it.

Yep, clearly he wasn't watching France's first or second games then, where Zidane stropped around the pitch in a mood with Domenech for 90 minutes.

Thierry Henry's another player who gets utterly sucked up to by the media.

Yes, he is capable of genius, but his blatant cheating against Spain was far worse than even Cristiano Ronaldo's.

But Henry's cringe-worthy swan dive has just been swept under the carpet in the media's eagerness to paint him as the saviour of the game (incidentally, he was largely crap in this World Cup too).

That moment has tainted Henry forever in my book. It was as digraceful a piece of cheating as anything I have ever seen.

It's frustrating, as I often think Henry does do more than most to try to stay on his feet, but attempting to get Puyol sent off like that was just the pits.

Henry has spent too much time in Wenger's company though.

He never, ever admits to doing anything wrong, and gets away with it because he has the press wrapped around his little finger. That face-clutching episode with Puyol was totally conclusive,
his conduct inescapably wrong, but even after seeing replays, he refused to concede that it looked embarrassingly bad, reverting to his usual trick of diverting the conversation on to something else.

And when things go tits up for him, he always blames other people. Look at the Champions League final, when he blamed the referee for Arsenal losing, despite the fact that Barcelona were clearly the better side, and were probably the team who had most to complain about in terms of the ref. He never seems to question why he frequently disappears himself in major games, either for club or country.

Cannavaro for me too, with Pirlo a close second, Pirlo got MOM awards in 3 games including the semi and final I think.
