http://www.tacsafety.com.au/upload/videos/TAC_levels.html is the latest anti DD ad.

Cant believe people think that a zero limit is unworkable. Surely it is the best way to know if you are over the limit or not. If you've been drinking then you are over.

if i have had a big night the night before and i am not sure if i am Zero BAC, then i will drive (go figure!) and not ride the scooter.

They have random breath tests over here all the time. Set up a couple of "Booze Buses" on a main road in or out of the city and pull everyone over. They also test for DRUGS;

Victoria Police have the right to pull drivers over at any time and test their saliva for traces of illicit drugs including THC, the active component in cannabis, the presence of methamphetamine (speed) and ecstasy. The procedure for random roadside drug testing is outlined below:

*
drivers are asked to provide a saliva sample by placing a small absorbent pad on their tongue for a few seconds
*
the sample is analysed at the roadside in a device that detects the presence of the drugs
*
the initial test takes about three to five minutes to complete
*
drivers who do not return a positive test result are free to leave without being detained any further
*
drivers who return a positive result are asked to undertake a further test inside the drug bus
*
a driver is then asked to provide two saliva samples - one to be kept by the driver and the other for further analysis
*
if this test also shows a positive result, the sample is sent to a laboratory for confirmation. The results of the lab test form the basis for charging the driver.

Motorists who return positive laboratory results for cannabis, methamphetamines or ecstasy are issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice or are prosecuted in court. If you are caught, the penalty could be a $1,321 fine and a six month licence cancellation. Do it again and it’s a $6,607 fine and a 12 month loss of licence.

I think we all agree that a zero level is impractical and unworkable, that is not in question. Its just an ideal.

How is that so?

If you have any acohol in your blood and drive you get nicked and banned end of story. At least with a zero limit everybody knows the state of the game unlike now when you could either pass or fail a breatherlyser on 2 pints.

I think that anybody who is banned, for whatever reason should have to retake their driving test before getting their license back.

I would like to see a zero limit, but as we all know, and has been stated before, there is alcohol is routine products we buy with out knowing, medicines, cold remedies etc,
thats why i believe it is unworkable

In all honesty the amount of alcohol present in things like medication is minimal and would be broken down by your body in no time at all so it would'nt really represent that much of a problem. I dont know what the police format is for testing but the drug and alcohol tests I have you have to declare all medication you've taken over a previous given time as well as any alcohol you've drank and even any mouth washes you've used on the day of the test as well as any sweets you've eaten on the day of the test as well. Once they've got this information then testing to see if your system is consistent with the information you've given them is relativly easy. Where you would have a problem is the amount of tests being carried out would inevitably lead to a backlog and it would involve large expenses carrying out all the tests as well.
