We were given a pair a few years back named Mavis and Derek. They were pretty inoffensive and low-maintenance apart from a tendency to flick seed across the room, cleaning the cage can be a bit of a chore but nothing too onerous, although care is required when poking the nozzle of the Dyson into it. Alarmingly after years of apparent harmony Derek attacked and pecked Mavis to death. He lived on in solitary for another couple of years before falling off his perch and lying motionless and claws up on the bottom of the cage. We never had any more birds.

Being cooped up with a bird for too long can do that to a male.

My old mum kept a whole bunch of birds back in the day and my dad wasnt so keen... he converted a pen into a blowpipe and assaulted them through the evenings firing bird seed at them... my mother could never catch him and couldnt understand why her birds were going mental every five minutes, as using bird seed, there was never any evidence...

I bet she wouldnt have complained if you'd gotten her a pair of the Rolls Royce of Australian finches, The Gouldian.
