Zavvi could be about to do a Woolies and go bust

A sign that things are really bad there is that they have now stopped selling their own gift vouchers. - if you have any, I would hurry up and spend them before it's too late.

Isn't Branson still underwriting them in an odd deal they did when there was the buyout last year?

I don't see them going bust, just that they've been hit by the knock on distribution problems of "2Entertain".

Crap Town
EUK which is (was) the distribution arm of the Woolworths group is owed £106M by Zavvi and the administrators have called in the debt so that the Woolworths creditors can be paid off.

They had a big sale advert in some of the papers today. Probably desperate to get more funds in to help by the sound of it.

I wonder if Sir Richard will buy it back?

Stores like that still make money because the gaming sector still brings the punters in, look at the Wii and Xbox360 sales.

That's going to leave a big boarded up corner of Churchill Square

Am I being naive in thinking that cash rich stores like Tescos dropping their prices aren't exactly helping the situation ?

I expect what we'll begin to see is what we've already got in Clapham. Two Sainsburys a hundred yards from each other, separated with a Tescos.

.. with a ten minute walk to another Tescos.

Tescos will be laughing all the way to the bank with this recession as only the retail fit will survive and they are.

.. and that will be the Tescos bank.

It would not surprise one bit if they started full banking shortly as their cash flow must be phenominal...........

I was in House of Fraser at the weekend on Oxford street and there were really pushing the sales. Was approached and offered gifts at 10% off and a further 10% off, if I took out a store card.

I politely pointed out that the further 10% off was off the discounted price (and not the original) thus less than the 20% off they were implying and that a store card with 20% interest wasn't something I was particularly interested in.

Oxford Street is definately less busy than last year, but I would a lot of the London trade (as opposed to tourists) has gone to the Westfield.

Did my usual wander round Harrods and was very busy but nothing like last year, when it was impossiblt to walk round.

Found the best bargains off Oxford Street, shops round Covent Garden seem to discounting a lot.

Not as extreme as New York a few months ago when I was on the way back from holiday. Popped in Macys and they almost giving stuff away.

I think Clapham needs a Waitrose...
