“The rules of the FA state that a player under 17 years of age may not enter into a contract of employment except under a scholarship and a player under 18 years of age may not enter into a full contract of employment.”

He turned 18 three weeks ago. Prior to that he was unable to enter into a full contract of employment. It seems that at the age of 17 he ‘extended’ his scholarship a year as you say according to the document on the Premier League website.

There seems to be a single source for this Sturge to Chelsea story: https://www.90min.com/posts/chelsea-set-to-sign-brighton-youngster-zak-sturge

I’m hoping that this new story is recycled from this one prior to Sturge having his scholarship extended:

http://www.thehardtackle.com/news/2...chelsea-had-two-bids-rejected-for-zak-sturge/

Hopefully the 90min journo has not checked his facts properly. I’m also hoping that only Brighton can offer him a contract (now he is 18) until his scholarship runs out at the end of this coking season.

Thanks for this Esteemed Rune. I'll continue on the basis that he'll remain with us, unless something more reliable appears to tell us otherwise.

Just to check, Sturge is out of contract, or does he have 1 year left?

For a youngster he seems to have a lot of self confidence in himself, on the assumption that he's driving these stories.

It appears we extended his scholar contract for a 3rd year. But you’d expect perhaps he’d have signed a pro contract by now if he wanted to stay long term

It's odd (from the outside) to see a young player looking at our 'pathway' and thinking "That's not for me".... Isn't he a left back? With the rumours of Cucu leaving, and it will happen eventually, he's lined up for 1st team action in the medium term, surely?

Or to put it another way, if you read through this whole thread it is obvious that none of us actually know. Maybe we'll find out in the next few days.

Will be interesting to see if he's involved with the 1st team at all in preseason.

But we will know after tomorrow, as any existing contract runs out then, right?

Was/is the option to extend his, or the club's? If it's the club's option to extend his scholarship, then that will start on 1st. July. At some point we will find out whether he's going or staying - when that point will actually be reached is just another thing we don't know - and won't until a). something happens, and b). when the club announce/confirm it.

Let's hope he's worth it.

Zak has said his goodbyes to the club on instagram. So not signing a new contract.

Sadly expected when we ‘extended’ his scholar contract rather than him signing a pro one ..

Supreme confidence? Over confidence? Future world super-star? ........................... or never to be heard of again? Time will tell.
