I think people underestimate how difficult it is to learn a foreign language. Especially to a level where you can confidently speak in public knowing full well that whatever you say will be reported around the world.

English is piss easy, I learnt it by the time I was 4 years old. Shirley anyone could learn it if they give it a go. Hill loose respect from his team if he don't learn it soon.

That's total bollocks. Last week, I watched a video of a 15-year Swedish schoolgirl address a UN conference on climate change, speaking in absolutely fluent English on a heavy scientific subject. She's also given a TED talk on the subject.

Given that, are you seriously suggesting that someone, in five years, can't learn enough English to give a 30-second interview?

How many languages have you learnt in your adult life?

Er... I've lived in England all my adult life so I haven't had to learn another language. But if I did move somewhere, I'd hope to be pretty fluent within a year.

As it happens, I've learned German well enough to go to the cinema or theatre in Germany and understand what I'm watching or to go to a social gathering and hold conversations. I've also learned enough Welsh and Italian to know the basics,hold rudimentary conversations and follow about 50% of TV or films. All of these were as an adult.

Swedish kids don't start school until they're 6 and don't start learning English until they're 8 or 9.

And she didn't just answer a few rudimentary phrases, she spoke fluently for 15 minutes during the TED talk.
