League Cup 1980/81

We were in the top division, they were in division three, it was a freezing soaking Tuesday night but Steve Gatting scored after two minutes, so we (50 of us max) thought it would be a stroll, but they stuffed us 4-1.

Long and miserable journey home.

mid-eighties, lost 3-1. train was late so missed first fifteen minutes. Score was already one all so missed the Albion goal. Then Steve Gatting missed a pen in the second half. I've been there five or six times and never seen us win there so not a favourite ground

I was there for the LC game and believe they were doing well in the division below us (2 rather than 3).

Dire place and pubs still closed in the afternoons and it was early closing day anyway (another old tradition up north) so we had a few hours with nothing to do & nowhere to go.

We did get comps (reminds me of a couple who always got comps, Penguin & friend, are they still around?) and, like El Pres says, early goal then thrashed by a big, powerful, side who were really up for it. Mick McCarthy was one of their huge players.

Been to Barnsley a couple of times since and awful place and we never did well. Pretty relieved to not be there today.

It was in 1981/82 under Mike Bailey.

(Gatting's goal does not feature in the clip. Boo).

only been once about 6 or 7 years ago, miserable day, miserable place, miserable journey, lost 1-0.

That's the only time I've been there. I remember it was about £1.50 for a pint but the locals didn't like 'outsiders' in their pubs. One of the most depressing places I've ever been to.

The match in 84? was it the FA Cup? I can remember walking down a muddy hill to the turnstiles and then after the game the muddy hill was frozen.

25th August 1990. The opening game of the season. Four like-minded Albion fans set off from Sussex full of optimism in my red Ford Sierra. The car is OK but we look a collective state as all four of us have decided to wear the new Pink Nobo away kit – for which on arrival the local Yorkshire folk generally take the piss out of us. Can’t remember a thing about the game other than we lost (2-1 according to stats).

After the game the fun started. Somewhere south the car developed a problem - can’t remember why (so many away trips, so many breakdowns). Managed to limp off the motorway and into a pub from where we called the AA. Decided we’d inevitably be towed home so downed a couple of pints. AA man turned up and fixed the car in about 5 minutes – only needed a fuse. Luckily not too pissed to drive so off we set… turned wrong way onto northbound carriageway, and had to drive 20 miles to next exit just to turn around and do another 20 miles back again.

Must have enjoyed it though as did every other Away game that season except two.

Decided to give Barnsley a miss this year!

I used to work with a bloke from Barnsley. For a few months my day started with him saying "aaalreet lad" and me saying "F*ck off you twat". After a while relations went downhill...

I was at the League Cup game, went with a mate from Uni who was a Barnsley fan. Had a few pints of John Smiths before the game, came out of the pub and walking up the road - couldn't have gone more that a few yards - when some guy across the road shouts out that I most be from Brighton, something to do with dress I guess, most likely because I had no flat cap. After Gatting scored I was feeling a little smug, but when they got going we were brushed aside. Mick McCarthy was immense. I stood on the side with Barnsley - I wasn't aware that there were any Albion there! Which was the same in the round before when we lost 1-0 at Huddersfield in the first leg. Both really miserable experiences.

Correct, I was at the Huddersfield game at Leeds Road too. It was a huge stadium, and the home fans wandered at half time from one end of the ground to the other so they could see Town attack us in both halves. We beat them 2-0 in the second leg to set up the humiliation against Barnsley. Agree about McCarthy, he wanted it that night, we didn't .

Another bad away experience from that era was at Stoke. As I recall it either a bore 0-0 or 1-0 loss, hardly any Albion at all. After the match the Police split the traveling few into groups, stand here for the coach. Driving? Step this way sir, and any one for the train station - we got driven there in ONE Police mini van. And this was the promised land of the first division!

1 of the worst away trips ever. The whole town was on strike & they wanted to kill anyone from outside Yorkshire, it was freezing cold, went in a pub which had 87 bitters & 1 lager which was DD & lost 2 - 1.

That was the one when the police surrounded the pub we were drinking in, told us to supp up and they would escort us to the ground, and did so via a chip shop stop. Loved the Staffs coppers.

Same game as El Pres - the League Cup Tie. Raining so hard the electrics went on my car lights. Once AA had sorted me, finally got there at half time. One of the handful of games where I failed to get a programme. Was Alan Young playing for them then?

That two-nil against Huddersfield at home was my first ever Albion game. As I recall, it was an absolutely shite game which we won with two goals in the last 5 mins when it looked like we were going out...
