When going to other people’s houses, I used to love browsing through their music collections whether on vinyl, cassette or CD - it could tell you a lot about who they were! Now just about everyone (unless they are a DJ!) keeps their playlists and downloaded music on devices, it’s not so easy to get a sneaky peak into the inner soul of others anymore!

This thread then is for people’s Top 20 hits of all time

- very hard to do but if it takes off, we could always post another Top 20 ‘as amended’ at a later time so you could add and take away songs from your Top 20 list then (or keep it the same!). At a much later date, everyone could nominate a favourite from their own list and we could add them to a poll to see if we can create a joint NSC top 10/20)

What to do

- Post a list of your Top 20 Hits - in no preferential order
- Please post a Youtube video link to one of the songs from your Top 20 Hits list when posting your list
- Specify which version you’re listing if there’s multiple covers of any song

Follow Up (if you want to)

- Each week, quote your first post again with the complete Top 20 on it (or copy and paste it) but post a link to a different song from your playlist so we can keep the music going. (That way, anyone joining the thread at different times can see your Top 20 again without trawling back loads of pages).

NB - Try and reflect as many different genres of music you are or were into in the past when selecting your songs to give everyone an idea of what you are about musically.

(It may take a while to narrow your favourite songs down to your Top 20 Hits so I’ll kick it off in the meantime)

Questions, @Zeberdi: Are we talking chart hits, or just favourite musical compositions? If it's charts, what charts and how far down these charts constitutes a hit?

Absolutely not! Your Hits - what for you are your most favourite- purely subjective - not what the best songs or greatest musicians were or what deserved to be hits and weren’t but what songs/tracks you love enough to be in your Top 20 of all time 🙂

(Obviously if we are going to be voting on a NSC Top 20 poll composed from one song from everyones list eventually, you might want to include a few songs other people may have heard of as well as being weird or obscure 😉)

Simply impossible to nail this down. There are hundreds of thousands of brilliant songs out there, and millions of duffers too.
I could name my 20 today, and 15 could be different tomorrow, and then another different 20 the day after..
Work on a Top 20 and post that over the next few days - as mentioned in o.p, we can do a Top 20 ’as amended’ in the New Year or earlier, so people can edit their list. It’s meant to be hard - Desert Island Discs 😉

EDIT - Would it help if each week you posted a youtube link to one of your songs, you then took that song off your list and replaced it with another? ie This week my song is ***** and I’m replacing it with **** ?

Odd comment given that that list contains a handful of the most innovative Black artists in music history, which is saying something given that Black artists have, on the whole, driven innovation in Western popular music. Were you being provocative or just unkind?

Just unkind I think. It looks blacker now.
