Same with The Entertainer.

I'm very much not any kind of film buff. I've never been a regular cinema-goer, and don't ever seek to be 'challenged' by a film, only entertained. That said, sometime you are challenged, or touched, or deeply moved, unexpectedly. In, no particular order, and offering only 10:
Escape to Victory. My all time favourite film, bar none. Not suggesting of course it is technical great in any way - I just love the (ridiculous) story. Magnificent fun.
Pulp Fiction. Utterly groundbreaking. Terrific acting and direction. Brilliant use of music. Terrific film.
Jaws. I'm 47. Jaws when released was the first 'event' film, of my lifetime. It was huge. And it had a girl in a bikini on the poster, which I liked.
True Romance. Like PF above, really marked Tarantino out as a special film-maker. The performances are incredible - Hopper and Oldman in particular, but the whole cast is a who's who.
Star Wars, Episode IV. Lots of shouts for ESB on this thread, which is fair enough, but the first film will always be the special one as far as I'm concerned. That cinema trip was magical, and I'll never forget it - it opened up a whole new galaxy to 7-year old me, and was the start of years of day-dreams and Christmas toy lists.
Alien. Absolutely terrifying. An utter master-class in suspense. Never too reliant on the effects - less is more.
Trainspotting. Mental. And brilliant.
Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just amazing fun. Harrison Ford was made for this role (and for Han Solo, obvs)
Atonement. Don't particularly care that much for the whole film, but it gets its place on my list, just for the one incredible 'Dunkirk' scene, filmed on Redcar beach. Filmed in a single 5 minute long take, it is beautiful, deeply moving, and an absolutely astonishing piece of film-making. If you haven't ever watched it, do yourself a favour, and watch it now on youtube. Five minutes very well spent.
Life is Beautiful. Amazing, heart-breaking film, and the only foreign language film that's ever managed to immerse me. Roberto Benigni's take on the delicate subject matter is so perfect - Schindler's List is an epic film, but this completely blows it out of the water in every single way. Escape to Victory may be my favourite, but this one is in my opinion the BEST film I've ever seen.
