I think you're misunderstanding the thread here, I don't think anyone has ever suggested that thing to be a world landmark!

I agree, now if this thread was The World's Worst Eyesore ......

Ridiculous comment.

Who goes to Oz just to see the landmarks?

Why? I don't see what Australia has that nowhere else does. It is so over-rated. It's got 3 nice cities, some decent beaches, a massive rock in the middle, a huge desert and the Great Barrier Reef (which, admittedly is incredible). And that's pretty much it. And it's the same size as Europe. Think of the highlights of Europe compared to Oz- London, Paris, The French Riviera, Edinburgh, The Costas, Madrid, Barcelona, The Alps, Venice, Rome, Dublin, Prague, Berlin, The Algarve, The Greek Islands, The Balearics, etc etc etc. The list could go on and on.

England alone has way more to it than Oz does, and it is about 30 times smaller. Australia offers a chance to go and see somewhere supposedly exotic, whilst being English-speaking and safe. That is why it is so popular.

Thank god I'm not the only one who found Oz a little disappointing. Have you been to NZ? What did you make of it? I'm considering a WHV there for a year, come the end of summer.

Yes I have been to NZ, in fact I did a WHV for a year there. I loved it, I thought it was much better than Oz. Much nicer scenery, friendlier people and not as full of twats.

Mannequin Pis. Utterly underwhelming, and yet remains on the 'must see' list of any trip to Brussels.

But it's definitely worth going there, because it's less than 10 metres from somewhere that is very much a 'must visit': one of Brussels's best pubs:

There is however, no such excuse for making any effort to trek out to the Little Mermaid.

You sound like you know nothing about Australia.

One of the most diverse places on the planet.

No offence but it sounds more like you were too thick to know what to look for.

To which you can also add the Little Mermaid statue in Copengahen.

Utterly Utterly UNDERWHELMING and stuck at the end of a very long dock!

None taken, I come across like that sometimes.

I should hope it is one of the most diverse places on the planet, seeing as it is one of the biggest. It would make sense really, that the 6th biggest country in the world is one of the most diverse, wouldn't it? But there are other places that are far more diverse, and are much smaller. So I don't think it is as impressive as everyone makes out.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Australia, I just don't see what this British obsession with it is. There are plenty of places that are far more interesting to visit that are easier and cheaper to get to. But people see Oz as somewhere exotic that is easy to visit because it is English speaking and safe. And for the size of the country, there isn't that much to see, compared to a lot of other places. Yes it has some amazing features, but so does every country, and with most others you don't have to get a 5 hour flight to get from one side to the other.

That's great to hear, cheers. Out of interest, where did you spend most of your time in NZ?

Auckland, unfortunately, but that wasn't the plan. We only got stuck there due to someone breaking their leg and not being able to travel, so we didn't spend as much time travelling around as we wanted to. I still saw everything I wanted to see but just didn't spend as much time as I wanted to in those places. It's easier to find work in Auckland than anywhere else, but I would stay away from it for as long as you can. It's OK, but its a bit of a Syndey-lite if you know what I mean. Similar but not nearly as nice. If you could find a job in Queenstown that would be your best bet, but it's not easy unless you happen to be a snowboarding instructor or something. Wellington is probably a nicer city than Auckland but I wouldn't bother spending much time in Christchurch. Reminded me of Eastbourne a bit. NZ is all about the countryside, the cities aren't up to much really.
