Your Help Needed - Vote for the Albion Community scheme to receive funding

Hi all - am posting this message on behalf of Martin Schooley, who works for the Albion Community Programme.

As part of a National programme, the Whitehawk Kickz Project run by Albion in the Community uses the power of football and the appeal of professional clubs, to target some of the most disadvantaged areas in the country. Kickz offers 12-18 year olds the chance to take part in positive activities during Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, 48 weeks of the year, with the aim of creating, stronger, more respectful communities through the development of young peoples potential.

The Kickz project in Whitehawk is applying for some money from the Sussex Criminal justice board, where they are giving out money based on people voting on the below link (Community Cashback). They have given me the all clear to accumulate as many votes for the project by any means necessary (apart from the same person repeatedly voting)

The deadline for votes is 7th August.

This bid is very crucial to the survival of the project as we are struggling to attract the necessary match funding to run in years 2 & 3.

Through the power of football and the appeal of the local professional football club the grant would be used to deliver the Kickz programme in Whitehawk.

Kickz is a National programme and was launched in April 2006 by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair and is aimed at creating safer, stronger and more respectful communities through the development of young people’s potential.

Its objectives are:

• To engage young people in a range of constructive activities
• To increase the playing, coaching and officiating potential for its participants
• To break down the barriers between police and young people
• To reduce crime and anti social behaviour in those neighbourhoods where it might be needed
• To create routes into education, training and employment
• To encourage volunteering
• And to increase young people’s interest and connections with the professional game.

Promoting community cohesion, the Kickz programme also delivers against the “Every Child Matters” campaign – staying safe, economic well being, being healthy, helping young people to enjoy and achieve and make a positive contribution.

The programme offers 12-18 year olds the chance to take part in a range positive activities during evenings of high anti-social behaviour, as identified by the police, three nights a week, 48 weeks of the year. Activities include football training, matches, tournaments, music and arts workshops, street cricket, boxing, dance and adventure activities such as climbing, paintballing and abseiling. Other activities include educational workshops about the consequences of knife crime and gangs, healthy eating, smoking, alcohol and drug awareness and fire and road safety. Other accredited courses offered include the Junior Football Organisers Award, the 1st 4 Sport FA level 1 Coaching Certificate, Junior and Community Sport Leader Awards, boxing accreditation, refereeing qualifications, Bronze and silver Arts Awards and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Whitehawk falls within the 10% most deprived super output areas within England. (DETR Index of Deprivation, 2007) In May 2008, the Whitehawk estate was identified by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) and East Area Joint Action Group as the neighbourhood that would most benefit from the delivery of a Kickz programme linked to statistics on youth disorder and the lack of youth sports provision in the area.

Since it began, Albion in the Community’s Kickz programme runs 3 sports sessions a week on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening, which utilizes the Crew Clubs’ Sport facilities. This offers the young people of Whitehawk and the surrounding estates free, accessible and regular range of sporting opportunities. In its first 9 months the Project has delivered over 381 session hours, attracted over 270 young people, with an average contact time of 26 hours 27 minutes per person.

Working in partnership with local organisations such as the Crew Club, housing associations, schools, Whitehawk Action Group, the local Police and safer neighbourhood team, youth services, Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership and the Fire Service, Youth Offending Team and Brighton Sports Development Unit, the Kickz programme meets the estates’ and city’s need of reducing anti social behaviour. In the first 6 months Kickz contributed to reducing anti social behaviour by young people in the area by 40.4% compared to the same time the previous year.
