If you like the Blues "The Story of the Blues is a brilliant sampler album which traces the history of the blues kicking off with some tribal chanting for the first track before starting with the country blues and jug bands of the early 20s and working up to the Chicago blues of the post war years.
Originally released around 1970 as a companion to Paul Oliver's book of the same name. It was Oliver who compiled the album tracks....

Surely C86 has to be right up there? Pretty much started it's own movement.

The Free Association is his project / band and is mixed in but the highlights are everything else. Rare soul, RnB and funk, pretty much the tracks everyone else discarded. When he produced it I'd seen him DJ at a couple of techno nights and he'd blown my mind but this opened me back up to "proper" music. Without this mix I probably wouldn't be listening to my favourite radio show, Craig Charles on 6 Music at 6pm on a Saturday nor would I have complied countless playlists with soul, blues and hip hop tracks or breaks. I can't adequately express how much it changed my world. But if you're ever sceptical about soul because you've heard Alexander O'Neil do an erection section or something, play one of your safe, overproduced soul "classics" and then play Johnny Jones And The King Casuals version of Purple Haze. It's on Spotify. You'll thank me later.

Brighton factually.....
Blood on the Cats and the sequel Revenge of the killer pussies..
Excellent 80s introduction to Psychobilly, Trash, Garage and indie bands that dabbled in the sound.
Bands on both Albums include the meteors, King Kurt, milkshakes, alien sex fiend, brilliant corners, to name a few.
Not everyone’s taste, but essential back in the day as an introduction set of albums.
