Shamefully ignorant of most parts of England, but if I had to live in England and didn't live in Brighton, I'm pretty sure I'd live in... Shoreham

Yours truly lived there, which is why it's now highly desirable real estate. The main coast road goes through it sadly, but it's got a nice town centre - the pub next to the footbridge has good food and brilliant river views from the conservatory. The big pub over the bridge to the lancing/shm beach side has reasonably good live music too.
A bit too densely populated now, in my view, and with the flyover and coast roads being so slow going now - I have to think there are better places. For proximity to Brighton it's okay at about 6 miles straight along the coast, or about 14 minutes by train.

Glad to see Dorset finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Lyme, Charmouth, even Bridport has it's charms, just.
Think Cornwall but only 2 hours away.

I was 'loving' Arundel, just the other day.
My train of thought went along the lines of:-
'what would an American think, driving up past McDonalds, cresting the hill, and there is a bloody great big, 1000 year old, castle in front of you'.
Plus it is where I proposed to Wifey.

Rye isn't as quaint as it once was. I always feel a bit sad when I return there. I grew up there in the 80s and 90s.

My vote is for Westerham in West Kent.
