Danny Wilson - A hard tackling no-nonsense midfield player, not necessarily the most skilful or gifted player ever to grace the stripes but always gave 110%, the sort of player who could dig you out of a hole and shore up the sides on the way out. We have undoubtedly had players who have earned more plaudits or had greater flair but for me he is the greatest player I have seen in over 25 years of watching the Albion. His attitude exemplified everything I love about football, good honest graft and a never say die attitude, the only player ever to come close since then is OGH...in my honest and humble opinion.
Indeed a lovely man. At about the time he was beginning to get in to the first team from the reserves he used to join the Farrel family for their regular Sunday morning kick about at Wish Park. He lodged with them in Portland Road. I used to play also.
At the time I had my favourites. There were Bert Adinall (joined us from QPR in 1953) and Jess Willard (established in the team for some time and lived around the corner from Roy Jennings in Sackville Road), but top of the list for me then was Johnny McNichol (lived with his family in Walsingham Road.)
Not long after that time Des Tennant (also lived in Walsingham Road) was another favourite of mine along with Frankie Howard, Dennis (Flash) Gordon and Denis Foreman.
Leading the line was Peter Harburn who has to be one of the best centre forwards ever to play for the Albion. He was a strong prolific goal scoring player. I remember one game at Loftus Road during our promotion season from Division Three South. He was getting a lot of stick from the Rangers' fans, but late in the game with the score at nil-nil he rose at the same time as their keeper tried to catch the ball. Peter headed the ball between the keeper's hands in to the net. He then continued his run around the back of the goal giving the v-sign to all and sundry.
Since then there have been many favourites, but there are two who were the very best and playing in the team at the same time. Mark Lawrenson is certainly the classiest player I have ever seen in the blue and white stripes and Peter Ward the most exciting.
Norman Gall. Proved himself by playing hundreds of games for Brighton (only club) then had Brian Clough tell him - you'll never play for me again son! after one mistake, to then go on and play a huge number more well after Cloughie had departed.
