Ban blades says Albion physio
By Andy Naylor
ALBION physio Malcolm Stuart has called for bladed boots to be banned following the horror injury suffered by Adam El-Abd.

The Seagulls have written to the FA to express their concerns about the terrible damage bladed boots can cause.

El-Abd suffered a gash to his calf so severe that the muscles were exposed after a challenge by a Millwall player wearing blades in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at The Den last month.

El-Abd required surgery to repair the wound and is still recovering from an injury described by long-serving Stuart as the worst sight he has ever seen on a football pitch.

Blades are a special type of stud, so-called because of their shape. They are designed to grip the turf, offering more stability for the player when turning and pivoting.

Albion actively discourage their players from using them and the majority wear traditional studs.

Stuart, the club's physio for 19 years, said: "We feel they are dangerous. One of the problems we had at Millwall was that we had to walk through different areas to warm up.

"That meant a lot of the lads walked on concrete and steps, which puts a burr onto the blade itself.

"We saw it with Danny Cullip at Nottingham Forest, where a blade nearly scalped him. We've seen it with Adam and I know speaking to other physios that they would rather the bladed boot was done away with.

"We have written to the FA, expressing our concerns. We have photos of Adam's injury, which we are prepared to let them have.

"The skin had actually been sliced so when he took his hand away it dropped, exposing the muscles. It is the worst sight I've seen on a football pitch.

"We have four officials now and they make a big thing of coming into the dressing room to check people's footwear but they don't check properly. A tap of the boot and they are let out.

"Whoever went onto that pitch the other night had dangerous footwear, which wasn't picked up. We shouldn't just pay lip service to these things, we should do them properly or not at all.

"We spoke to the fourth official on the night and he said if we could tell him the player that had caused the incident he would check their boots but, of course, that is after the event. They should have been checked thoroughly before."

The emergence on the market of bladed boots has coincided with a dramatic rise in high-profile metatarsal injuries, suffered by the likes of Wayne Rooney and David Beckham.

Many medical experts believe it is no coincidence. The thin blades can penetrate a boot, breaking foot bones. Also, because of the rigidity of the boot with the blade deep into the ground, they do not have give' in them.

That can put the metatarsal under extreme pressure when the boot is in a fixed position, leading ultimately to a break.

Stuart said: "The technology behind it supposedly gives players better ability in turning. I can't see there is a massive difference.

"We've had a look at a lot of the foot injuries with the difference in boots and we've found that to be a problem as well. A lot of the metatarsal injuries we put down to the flexibility of the boot. People like tight, light-fitting footwear, but you can't run the risk of injuries.

"We would love something to be done. Whether anything will get done I don't know, because the footwear companies don't seem to take on board any of the problems.

"They put a lot of money into the game. I suppose they feel it is their right to market their boots."

Stuart is in illustrious company in calling for blades to be banned. Sir Alex Ferguson branded them a "dangerous fad" when former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane suffered a broken foot against Liverpool last year.

Albion striker is the perfect neighbour
By Tom Gurney

A former County League goalkeeper has revived his playing days thanks to his well known next door neighbour.

Kevin Ancell came out of retirement to play for Sussex Sunday League side Rottingdean Village after a helping hand from Albion striker Alex Revell

Good to see Hendo is trying to get rid of his blades :lolol:
