Probably been done before but...Following on from the Garth Crooks is a twat thread...

...who would go down as your bestest sports pundit/commentator on tv or radio ? Past or present.

Short list for me has to be :

Phil Liggett & Paul Sherwin - The dream team of cycling commentary. Like wearing a pair of comfy slippers.

Michael Johnson - Always offers insight into athletics that no other pundits can match.

Blowers - TMS at it's very best.

Stuart Hall - Simply LEGENDARY !

Guillem Balague the guy is a legend.
James Richardson is still a hero despite the fact he hasn't been on British telly for years. And the English guy on the NFL Nick Halling.

All the guardian podcast crew, Marcotti, Alan Smith and the legendinho Tim Vickery.

Crooks doesn't annoy me, guess I'm lucky. Used to like Balague but he talks shit about transfer that will definitely happen but never do.

At the moment, Guillem Balague

From years gone by, Murray Walker and Harry Carpenter.

Although I am easily old enough to remember Blowers on TMS I am happy enough with Aggers and Tuffers...hearing the latter talking about Matthew Hoggards dog was comedic genius.

I like Rob or Peter Beagrie (whichever one it is, I'm lousy with names). Shows a knowledge and appreciation for the lower divisions without being patronising, seems to have a better grasp of the laws of the game than most pundits, which leads to a better respect for the refs, and so doesn't spend the game trying to undermine them or fill the commentary with needless questioning of decisions etc.

Ted Lowe and Clive Everton's voices are/were perfect for Snooker. In fact, most of the Snooker team - Steve Davis, John Parrott.

Stuart Hall, as previously mentioned. Always love his reviews. The laughter, the similes, the inflections. Great stuff.

Murray Walker's commentaries were genuinely the most exciting part of F1. It's no coincidence that since his retirement F1 is officially (in my house anyway) the world's most boring sport.

Chris Kamara and Jeff Stelling. A genuine love of the game and the ability not to take yourself too seriously is always a big help when you're a commentator and these two fit the bill perfectly.

Boris Becker. I only ever occasionally watch Wimbledon but always enjoy his input. A funny and self-deprecating man who puts paid to the lie that Germans don't have a sense of humour. Add to that Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe.

Going out on a limb here - Alan Green. Yes, I know he's premiership obsessed and a miserablist know-all but I love hearing him moan. It's part of the furniture for me.

Going against the grain, again, I also think Andy Townsend is a pretty good commentator. Alan Hansen too.

Edit - and when BBC2 used to show the Africas cup I always enjoyed Pat Nevin and Gavin Peacock's summaries. Very knowledgeable blokes.
