That Kent game was only 34 years ago yet four of the players are now dead: that's a pretty shocking statistic.

In 1973, 263 in a 60 over game was considered a MASSIVE total
How things change!
Indeed.
Hampshire now consider that a massive total in a four day game.
I played for St Peters as well. Mark Smallwood et al.
and Glenn Potter, Chris Green, Stuart Smart, Kevin Ellis, Glenn Tomkins, etc. Newhaven were our main rivals, as they had the Wells' brothers and a big f***** called Jesty.
My Dad took me to a Gillette Cup game in the early 70s v Kent. Not sure of the year but we scored about 270 and bowled them out for a lot less than that.
I also remember a game against the Australians in 73 (maybe?) when Gary Gilmour scored a quick 100 and Dennis Lillee started his bowling run-up about 6 inches in from the boundary rope in front of the Arthur Gilligan stand
Neil Lenham was a good player but suffered an abnormal number of finger injuries.
We lost to Gloucestershire iirc, and I think it was Roger Prideaux's last game. Pretty sure he got 70 odd. That's the first game I can remember watching Sussex, although I probably went earlier that summer.
Prideaux got 28. It was Greenidge who scored the 76. We got undone by Procter's 94

Missed that game: was travelling back from holiday. I remember stopping at towns on the way back from Stratford to look in TV shop windows to follow the score (no car radios in those days - not in 1961 Hillman's anyway)
