Yesterday was probably the most embarrassing day as an Albion supporter

Posted this on the wrong thread but what about one of McGhee's last games when we lost 4 - 0 at Withdean, can't remember who against but I am sure somebody will tell me, when we played awful with no passion or effort.

Stoke. Always bloody Stoke. 5-1 I think. That fat lad Rooney (not that one) scored a hat trick.

What a rubbish post. Clearly, nobody wanted to lose like that, but "most embarrassing day"? Not in a million years. I had a couple of people at work ask me about it as they knew I went, but we just had a laugh about it. To be honest, the three OG thing makes it slightly easier because people tend to think of OGs as unlucky (whether true or not). They're thinking that we had a massive dose of misfortune, which is easier to play along with, as if anything we were lucky not to concede more.

After the Palace home game, I was pissed off for DAYS. The 5-0 defeat at Castle Greyskull was WAY worse. Losing 7-1 at a side in the same division as us was horrific (albeit entertaining). Losing 4-0 at "home", 70 miles away, to sodding DARLINGTON a few years ago really is humiliating.

And besides: it's only the FA Cup. Nobody except us will even remember the result in a month, much less the end of the season. It will be forgotten in no time, so long as our league form doesn't suffer. Seriously: if that's the most humilating thing that's ever happened to you as an Albion supporter, you must have either (a) only started supporting two months ago or (b) live an incredibly successful and fulfilled life, in which case I congratulate you.

Thread closed although I will raise you Torquay at home(well - Priestfield) 97/98 and losing 4-1!

Most humiliating since Huddersfield, the own goals were just comic we looked like a league 2 side especially with the exchanging of shirts afterwards

Reality bites!

Sitting in a downtown Stockholm bar in my Albion shirt, getting eyebrowed by the few disinterested watchers at an Irish sports-pub chain, and nobody was interested enough to make it out on a cold windy and rainy evening (it hasn't really been very windy or wet in my time in Sweden, but Sunday was one of those days) - wasn't exactly a highlight of my life as a Brighton fan. I was thinking that despite anything, I could wear the stripes with pride - and I carried it through without (much) swearing at the telly.

I was at Selhurst for 'that' match, and have not expected too much of our lads because I have always known 'where we stood' in the scheme of things.
So, we lick our wounds a bit and maintain hopes and soldier onwards and upwards.
That's how it is being a BHAFC Seagull. Rome wasn't built in a day, and I have a faith - yes even when we went to Hereford for our very existence.

I'm just pleased that we played Premiership sides 4 times this season in Cup competitions.

2 wins and 2 losses? Think most would have settled for that at the start of the season.

Won't be long before we play Premiership teams twice each season as a matter of course.

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread but felt the need to reply. If this is your most embarrassing day ever then you aint be around long. Bristol Rovers 2-8, Palace 5-0, Huddersfield 1-7. There are so many more emabarrassing than Liverpool, & every report I read said that the result flattered Liverpool but we did most of the damage ourselves.

Does anyone remember a league cup game, I think it was Southend, could have been Fulham, maybe in the 80's. I'm quite sure we lost on penalties & they had an outfield player in goal. Now that's embarrassing.

What are you gonna do, support another team? It's life as a Brighton fan but recent success has dulled people's memories.

like u i can't b bothered to read whole thread...i was at the 2/8 home loss...and i could add the defeats against leatherhead..walton and hersham and many more...far far worse than sundays

I think Edna and some of the other posters laying into the OP are missing the point.

No-one, apart from other Brighton fans and the fans of the other teams involved, will have any recollection of the other bad defeats mentioned, including Palace away, Darlington, Huddersfield etc. Yes, they were worse results. But in terms of a world-wide audience watching us and the press coverage, this was arguably the most embarrassing. Three own goals, comedy defending, amateur-ish tactics. The only other one in recent memory that stands comparison is the 8-2 at home to Bristol Rovers, which also had national coverage because it was on Match of the Day.

We did look like a lower league side having their 'big day out' and getting hammered, unfortunately.

We lost 6-1 to Oldham in 1990-1991 and went on to make the Play Off Final. Okay, we capitulated to Notts County (a worse performance than Sunday in my view), but that showed these results are not necessarily the nightmare they're made out to be. Of course what is crucial is how well Gus can pick the team up. At least the DVD will give them plenty to work on, not least Mr Godden with both goalkeepers.

Just 3 years ago that's what we were practically. People forget just how far we've come in such a short time.

Pleased someone on here understands my point. Thank you.

To put it another way that you lads and lassies might understand better:
- 5th round of the FA Cup - high profile? Agreed?
- Away to Liverpool - high profile? Agreed?
- Albion were hammered. Agreed?
- Some (too much) of our defending was comical. Agreed? (I hope so - even Gus admits it)
- Three own goals. Not a good reflection on the performance. Agreed?

So in summary we were hammered, due in a large part to some comical defending and 3 own goals, in a high profile game. Cosequently the story was plastered all over the newspapers. Embarrassing? I think so.

Defeats in League One to Huddersfield, in Division whatever to Bristol Rovers, cup defeats against minnows - all pale in comparison to this debacle.

As I said .... embarrassing as hell.

I personally wasn't embarrassed at all on Sunday, I had a thoroughly enjoyable day despite the result.
The fact I wasn't embarrassed probably stopped me getting too much abuse at college from all the plastics, because they new I wouldn't get all defensive about it. I thought the own goals were pretty funny, and two of them couldn't really be helped.

Especially Walton & Hersham who were non league and thrashed us 0-4 at the Goldstone...

That wasn't too bad as we went 1 - 0 and chasing a goal they broke away and scored a 2nd we then spent the rest of the match playing with Brian Powney on the half way line pushing for goal that didn't come and in so doing they scored twice more. As they say you may as well lose a cup match 4 - 0 as 1 - 0.

What's to be embarrassed about?

What if Coventry, Burnley or Leicester got a hammering from a premier league team, in the cup. How much attention would you pay to the result? Not much, I would guess.
That's about how much the rest of the football world is bothered about us.

How can losing a football match be embarrassing, you need to man up. This season has all been ups and downs, loving every minute of it. Not going to forget it for a while.

Went into work and got a bit of stick but the united fans that gave me stick also got stick when they got thrashed earlier in the season. It all gets forgotten about. If we make the play offs this season we have punched above our weight, we are still playing with players that we all know won't make the grade. If you thought we were going to thrash Liverpool at home you are deluded. At 3-1 we went for it, and it was always going to make or break us.
