Yelldell's days numbered?

From the Anus:
Albion manager Mark McGhee today revealed he is considering bringing in a new goalkeeper ahead of the visit of Sunderland on Saturday.

The Seagulls boss has been concerned by the form of David Yelldell in the last two matches and has lined up a possible loan signing to replace him.

Yelldell impressed on his debut for Albion in the 1-1 draw at Leeds United, a day after arriving on a month's loan from Blackburn Rovers, but gifted Derby a goal in the 3-2 defeat ten days ago and looked nervous as the Seagulls went down 2-0 at Cardiff on Saturday.

With Michel Kuipers ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery and Ben Roberts due to make a comeback from back trouble for the reserves today it leaves Chris May as the only alternative to Yelldell.

May made his debut when he replaced the injured Kuipers for the last few minutes against Nottingham Forest but McGhee is worried about throwing the 19-year-old in at the deep end against the free- scoring Black Cats.

McGhee said: "Losing Michel Kuipers has been a big blow for us. David played brilliantly against Leeds but has looked nervous in the last two games.

"He was not at fault for either of the goals at Cardiff but his performance was not as good as he would have hoped and his kicking was poor.

"It is not a major issue but we will have to see whether David can recover his confidence before the weekend. If we can't sort him out then we will need to put someone else in.

"Chris is inexperienced and I don't think he is ready for the first team yet but if there is no other option then we would have to go with him."

Roberts was not expected to be fit to play again until April but has responded to treatment better than expected. He is due to play for the reserves at Northampton along with Chris McPhee, who has recovered from a broken bone is his foot.

Even if Roberts comes through unscathed McGhee would not be willing to risk him against Sunderland, while the Albion boss has also ruled out handing former Arsenal keeper Rami Shaaban a surprise debut.

"Rami is training with us this week and then we will see if we want to take things further," said McGhee. "But he hasn't played any games for a long time so he is not an option for Saturday."

Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop is one goalkeeper currently looking for a new club.

Reserves: Roberts, Watson, El-Abd, Mountford, Rents, Cox, Hammond, Carey, Robinson, Gatting, Jarrett.

I do hope MM has worked on the defense this week in training.

well it aint gonna be Ian Bennett cause Adams has got him and trevor Benjaman

Coventry have moved to sign Ian Bennett and Trevor Benjamin.
The Sky Blues have taken over the contract of Benjamin - who leaves Northampton Town to rejoin manager Micky Adams.
Goalkeeper Bennett has sealed a one month loan switch from Birmingham, with an option for a longer stay.
"We're delighted to have secured another two players for the squad," said Adams - who managed Benjamin whilst at Leicester.
"Trevor is a very honest professional who works hard for his team-mates, which is exactly what we need.
"He has a decent pedigree and has experience of scoring at this level, which is important.
"We've taken Ian for a month, with a view of extending the deal further and I'm pleased to have him on board.
"I'd like to thank Steve Bruce and Karren Brady for their help in getting the deal done, which has been invaluable," added Adams on the club's official website.

Good to hear McPhee is getting nearer first team football. An extra striker option is something we have struggled with all season.

I hope we do get a new keeper for Saturday. Yelldell is very low on experience & confidence and all this talk of getting a new keeper won't help.

have not seen yelldell so cannot make a judgement. but reading the article i could not avoid thinking his time is almost up. MM is a fair man and gives players opportunities so he may well give him another game but can see Shaka possibly coming in

I'll be glad to see the back of him. I only hope his replacement is up to the job and not just cheap! :nono:

From Stoke to Forest, we conceded 5 goals in 7 games.
Since Yelldell has been in goal, we've conceded 6 goals in 3 games.

Probably a tad unfair on Yelldell as there are obviously other factors (ie the quality of opposition, the personnel in front of him), but the stats don't paint a good picture. And two of Derbys goals were as a direct result of cock-ups by Yelldell.

Harsh perhaps, but I really don't blame MM for looking elsewhere now. I think the primary asset we need between the sticks is experience. Many (me included) thought that Beasant was well past his sell-by when we brought him in a couple of years ago, but he did a great job for us. Obviously I'm not looking for him to bring back Big Dave, but I'd much prefer to see a keeper who's been around a bit than one of these young, unproven keepers with only a handful of 1st team games to show for their career so far.

Good to see Roberts & McPhee back, although I'm sure it'll be a while yet before Roberts especially is back - would be great to have him back before the end of the season.

Good call. When Kuipers first got injured, McGhee said he was looking for an experienced goalkeeper who had played at this level before. Exactly what was needed in my opinion. Instead we ended up having to choose between two very young keepers with barely any first team experience.

Yelldell did very well at Leeds (maybe we should bring back the pink shirt?) but he looked like he was sinking the bismarck against Derby. He reminded me of my traumatic schoolboy goalkeeping career, shoulders hunched up and looking like he was only selected for the role because he was crap in outfield.

We have to get an older goalkeeper in, one who can communicate with the defence and position himself well. If we don't, we could be in for a whole heap of trouble.

I also didn't like the look of him before the start of the game against Derby, i thought he was testing out an injury, but he was obviously very nervous, bring in some experience please....

Fair points generally, but I only remember the second one being down to him?
The third one was also down to him.

It didn't get shown in the TV replays, but Yelldell went down to his left and spilled a very weak 25 yarder - it should have been an easy, straightforward shot to gather, but he fumbled and the ball ran loose. Led to a panic-hoof from Mayo, which went straight to a Derby player, who played in Tudgay, who battered it in for 3-2.

OK the defending in front of him was also poor, but the fact remains that goal would NOT have happened had Yelldell not fumbled the initial feeble shot (which may even have been going wide anyway).

You cant use that reasoning - If the midfield had of shut down the shot it would not have led to yelldell to spill the shot - you can work further and further backwards picking up mistakes

Of course he can - he's talking about a Yelldell mistake just seconds before and directly resulting in a defensive panick that led to a goal.

To be honest, after the way he looked and played on the day I'm grateful he only conceded 3

Exactly.
I take your point, Masturbation, but Yelldells fumble, when it should have been a straightforward gathering of the ball, led to the defensive panic which, 5 seconds later, saw the ball nestling in the back of our net.

Unfair maybe, but the fact is that goalkeeping errors inevitably end up being more costly.

I think that is totally unfair. Yes he did spill a weak shot but the defensive hoof should have been row Z not into midfield.

The ball then dropped between Hinsh & Butts rather than being dealt with. So how is that then Yelldell's fault??

Generally he looked nervous and not a solution to our problems but to blame him for the 3rd goal is plain fcuking stupid!
