Very intelligent player. I've just watched his open goal from behind him, you can see Raya is making a dive to protect the open space and Ayari places the ball into the space he is vacating rather than the open space and Raya saves with his knees

I'm unsure if this is unlucky, great goalkeeping or a bad shot
Probably a lot of the first, a fair share of the second, and a little of the third.

Raya had a top game. The speed in which he gets back up from the first dive is brilliant and means that whilst the shot isn’t perfect, he ends covering a remarkable amount of the goal by the time he saves it.

Happy to give him a break on that one. Really stepping up so far and think he’ll be a bit of an unsung hero this season.

Yes, Yasin Ayari has improved remarkably in the last three days, going from a player most of NSC would have been happy to see loaned out to someone who is better than Billy Gilmour, who was apparently shipped out because he's not good enough to get us to Europe. Narrative bending and tinted glasses has made him go from a Championship midfielder to a semi-regular starter in a team that people expect to end up top 8 in the PL.

Very happy for him - and us - if this remains the perspective throughout the season and not only now when it is a strong desire to see every move he does as if he's the next Alexis Mac Allister.

I like Ayari and think he could become a good player, but the honeymoon factor here is very strong: imo, Ayari playing a lot of PL football is a real weakness and Wieffer/Baleba/Milner/O'Reily/Hinshelwood (and Gilmour for that matter) are all better than him by a fair margin. I'm hoping to be proved wrong and that he's super good etc. like every new/fresh player always is until they're not.

Really hope Wieffer & some left back are back after the international break. Baleba and Ayari worked really hard but none of them are able to be the "engine" on PL level. Hinshelwood or Wieffer needs to be there or contol/chance creation is going to be a problem every game.
Right now, Billy Gilmour is the better player, but both Gilmour and Ayari will improve further, and I am not sure which will end up the better player, or if there will be much in it.
It just hasn't gone that well for Gilmour since he joined us. Potter left, and I think De Zerbi's management style was difficult for Gilmour, who seems to be a bit sensitive. He had that stalker girl making accusations as well, and it all adds to the "not happy at Brighton" feel and desire to move on. I thought Hurzelers man management would suit him better, but maybe the style of play would suit him less.

I think Ayari has confidence, makes good decisions quickly, and moves the ball well. I don't think I have seen him make a tackle though, and that's where Gilmour has the biggest advantage over him right now.

We will see how it turns out, but I think Ayari will grab his opportunity and run with it.

Not sure exactly what you’re getting at. Think people are pleasantly surprised by him not that he’s the next messiah.

We were better with him on the pitch yesterday. They dominated for long period of that opening 20 mins. Once he settled we controlled possession a lot better and the game was pretty even at the time Arsenal scored. This all up against a 3 very good midfielders from Arsenal.
The red card had a massive affect on the game obviously.

Always hard to judge players on loan. The championship is a tough league and he didn’t get a lot of game time but Blackburn struggled, but with good players round he may well flourish.

At the moment he’s likely still 6th choice but he’s making an impression which is all we can ask with the time he’s getting.
His pass to Andringa v Utd for the winner was executed perfectly for example. Without the pass at the pace and quickness Andringa doesn’t have the time to pick out Pedro.

I remember that before we bought him, someone observed that Ayari had great awareness of players around him.

I think he's giving 100% and taking his chance.
Being level headed.
Willing to learn.
I think having a young manager will help the younger squad members adapt and listen better too.
Fabian doesn't have to necessarily worry about old heads of Dunk, van hecke, veltman and the goalie.

Rated Ayari's performances in pre-season and his cameo at Everton, hope he sticks around instead of going out on loan but expect he won't given all the incomings.

Notable that despite coming on in the 89th minute Ayari accumulated an xG of 0.43, second only to Mitoma (0.97, 89 minutes played) and ahead of Welbeck (0.20, 90 minutes of normal time played).

I like Ayari and think he should be given a chance this season. He's looked sharp in pre-season and was decent when he came on at the weekend.

Exactly. Neither can I but he obviously also scored against Kashima Antlers, he gets into good positions.

Did really well when he came on and absolutely brilliant, classy pass for the pre assist!

Forget a loan, keep him here!

Exactly this.

Great little player

Not sure if it was a straight choice between Ayari and Sarmiento for a place in the squad, but 20 year old Ayari was chosen ahead of the more experienced 22 year old Sarmiento.

Can I be the first to say that he should have shot to the near post? Raya had a lot of ground to make up, it would have had to travel less distance, and was the most likely place for him to score.
None of this detracts from how well he's seized his opportunity. I haven't had the highest of hopes for him, but he's been very good in pre-season and the energy and intensity he's provided from the bench this season has been hugely impressive. He made a couple of errors yesterday but, for the most part, was highly competent and in no way overawed by the occasion. His pressing and intensity was again very good, and he won the ball back a good number of times.

Maybe, but Raya’s body weight and therefore spring was heading in that direction, plus I think (without rewatching) Ayari’s body position would have seen him cutting across the ball a little, which would have been more difficult to execute, small things, but personally I still think in that split second moment he took the right option….

I thought exactly the same ..can only think it’s a barbed comment about most of the posters on NSC 🤔

I agree with you that he should have shot to the right

Just an observation that might have meant he would go left..the ball ricocheted to him and was spinning from right to left and him being right footed and taking it first time (?) it was inevitably going to go left ..

Two points.

One is that Ayari is more likely to score a goal than WBG. That’s not to say he’s a better player. Simply that Gilmour for all his attributes is demonstrably poor in front of goal while Ayari at Everton and yesterday showed that he can hit the target at least.
It’s way too early to compare wider aspects of their game other than to say they are very different players.

The second is that I’m pretty sure that with everyone fit Ayari is unlikely to be a starter most of the time. That would also have been true of Gilmour had he stayed.
I very much suspect that was a large part of his wanting away.

They are completely different kinds of midfielders so pointless comparing the two, Gilmour keeps the ball much better whereas Ayari is more of an all round 8 — albeit as I think Crawley showed is not the answer yet to our vacancies in midfield. He has come on a lot in 12 months and that’s all you can ask. Needs to keep improving

If I were a betting man, I'd wager that Ayari himself thinks he should have scored. In fact, I'd have a fiver on him saying, in a sort of Tunisian-Moroccan-Swedish accent, something like: "I should score. If I see that he's on the left side, I'll just put it on the right. But in those moments everything goes so quickly and I thought he was running to the first post, so I thought I would put it on the second."

I can't remember a time when everyone is fit. :)

Sure, he probably had nightmares about that... but it was not the easiest situation IIRC. Lots of people around and the goalie being out of position for half a second... all you want to do is get it on goal, and thats what he did, but the goalie made a good/lucky move. Fine margins.
