The Fly - superb, cronenbourg on top form, the rmake is far superior to the original

Robocop - good film do doubt but very 80's and a bit dated now

The Crow - ok film, did not rate it particularly

War of the worlds - derided on here but it is a very good effort with some superbly staged set pieces with post 9/11 apocalyptic vision and references, ok the end was weak but it was in the book as well

Tom Cruise War of Worlds was a very bad film.

The noise the aliens make when they start coming out of the ground is one of the best noises Ive ever heard though :)

I do not understand why you say WOTW is a bad film. It is a modern re working with some excellent moments and the tripod under the ground section is superb, is rattles along at a decent clip and some of the scenes are cinemtic masterpieces such as the said coming up from ground, tripods over the hill, ferry section, tripods v man battle, tripods slaying and spreading red weed etc.

There are some good individual set pieces but taken as a whole the film lacks pace, direction and clarity of message. It is over completative in the first two thirds and abandons the aspirations of it's first two thirds as it enters it's final act.

Spileberg's sometimes succesful employment of the broken family backstory and it's inherant emotional hangover falls flat on it's face for no other reason other than Tom Cruise simply being unable to convince as a blue collar worker struggling to relate to his children. This flaw carries forward into the body of the film as an audience fails toconnect with Cruise portrayed as an everyman character.

What could have and should have been a great re-make fails on it's most fundamental premise. The mis-casting of Cruise and subsequent lack of empathy with his character, the over procrastinating first two thirds and the ensuing lack of direction resulting in an under developed third act that leaves the audience in confusion.

While blockbusters are passable as entertainment when executed well, when they fail to deliver on even the most rudimentary of criteria, such as pace, suspended disbelief and a conclusive third act they become failures. What makes this particular foray so disappointing is that we know Spielberg, when on form, can produce touchstone and definitive blockbusters.

In my opinion.

You're absolutely right in some of what you say, but Spielberg is walking proof of how bolting on a saccerine, schmaltzy out-of-place ending can ruin a film for people with a brain.

WotW was a fine example of that. Spielberg is not alone in doing this, it has to be said - but so many of his films endings make me want to puke.

If the aliens in WOTW were so clever then they should have invented Lemsip as well. Useless film, made worse by the inclusion of that fucktard Cruise.
