Who is ANDREW SMITH? A property developer from Surrey? What does he want with Wrexham football club?

Maybe I'm just cynical, but when a property developer from miles away buys a football club and the freehold of their ground, I smell a rat.

I know it must seem like anything and anybody is better than Hamilton, but frying pans and fire spring to mind. I sincerely hope I'm wrong and this Smith chap is a Wrexham fan, but .....

Cardiff City Football Club is currently owned by a property developer from the Lebanon. He bought the club when it was virtually bankrupt, has taken it to its highest league position in almost 30 years, and has had plans approved to build it a new stadium.

Who knows how that story will end? And who knows how the Wrexham story will end?

Wimbledon fans on the other hand may have been worried when he first took over, that they may lose their ground, go for a share somewhere before having their identity sold down the river completely by the fella, but fortunately none of that ..... , oh hang on ...........

Not at all, ownership is not exclusive to football fans, how could it be? I'm delighted that Hamilton is gone, or at least going.

I'm just saying that I'd approach this with cautious optimism if I was a Wrexham fan, until I know a bit more about the guy and why he's doing it.

I hear what you're saying, 100%. But the fact is that dodgy businessmen of one sort or another have always been involved in football, and they almost certainly always will. Some of them turn out to be heroes, some turn out to be villains. That's the nature of the game. Or perhaps it would be more accurate these days to say that's the nature of the business.

He has not got a track reord of a property developer. The Bramber scam involved selling land with the implied promise they could build on it.

If you steal a billion they make you King, if you steal a few thousand they put you in jail.
