I'm already going to Marseille to cheer on Scotland against South Africa in the egg-chasing world cup
I will be there for England v Argentina the day before, but rugby is just a tad different as we know. Was there in 2007 for the Q/F with Australia, a totally different atmosphere to the Russia one in 2016!!

My sister and her husband have a boat moored in the marina, so yes, a trip to Marseille would be great for me. Whether I'd be able to get a ticket is another question.
I'll bring the Sancerre. Just don't mention this to Kevin Day or a certain football finance expert's life will be hell.

I used to drive artics through Marseille and through the infamous port enroute to Sardinia.
Let's say the locals aren't that friendly.
Only warning to give whilst in the port area, was to stay in yr truck at all times.
As to the footy question....calling @Dr. No

Sydney .
Absolutely, surely this is what it’s all about ??
Spent 4 days there in mid-June two months ago.
Great contrast between the more traditional Vieux Port and the newly gentrified wharf area which is studded with museums, bars & restaurants with the rustic district of Le Pannier also close by.
If time allows, a short ferry ride out to Frioul is a very nice excursion.
Just make sure you avoid the 16th Arrondissment - most of the estates there are a police no-go zone.

I won't be travelling anywhere as I don't like people. Away days here are bad enough.

Don't the papers say that about parts of London?
Is Marseille really that bad or is it just Parisian media being dramatic as someone suggested earlier in this thread?
There's no love lost between Paris and Marseille. On and off the pitch.

Went to Holland v S Korea there in 98, spent the day in the Vieux Port and it was fine. Was a week after the England Tunisia riots and you would never have known that there was devastation the week before.

When I was there local tv news covered a story one day of very heavily armed police snatch squads going into a drug-lord controlled estate in an attempt to make arrests.
Much better to embrace the wonderful Marseillese tradition of a late afternoon pastis than concern yourself with the violent goings on in area of the city that isn’t only not close but one you’re unlikely to ever visit.

I think there is a certain amount of naivety about what is waiting in some European cities

It doesn't matter if you are keeping yourself to yourself, behaving well or not looking for trouble. If certain locals clock you as being a foreign football fan, they see you as fair game. So too certain police forces

Marseille is very much one of those based on experience
