no way - id hate to see teams like liverpool, chelsea and man united playing at our home ground, and i really wouldnt want to see the best players in the world playing against us. and the opportunity to play games at venues like old trafford and anfield doesn't interest me in the slightest. as for the £60m, i really dont care if it could be a real boost to the club financially

Seen it, and although there were some great days, akin to staying in the Championship, most of the time we were played off the park. The crowds dipped quite alarmingly from memory and the atmosphere was seldom as good as it had been when we'd been up at the top.

The only time we actually competed well and looked relatively at ease was when Mike Bailey was manager and he got the sack for being boring.

If you've never seen the Albion at the top level I agree 100% that you want to see them there, but unless we have the money to do a Wigan I think you might get quite depressed seeing your team outclassed every week. Think 2nd season in the Championship under MM but worse

My memory of the early 80's in Div 1 is also of us struggling to compete on a regular basis and the 'populist' dismissal of Mike Bailey was (imo) the start of the Albion's decline that has lead us to Withdean. OK, there's a certain amount of hindsight about the latter - I just hope that recent events do not turn out to be a repetition of previous mistakes.

I think the hindsight will mean a longer rise to the top flight but also a long stay when we do get there!!

For me, I can't understand why anyone would want us playing in the premiership. People on this post talk about going to see world class players, the majority are over-rated, over-paied and greedy, and personally wouldn't want to associate myself with that world of football. I love either being in League One or the Championship, going to big stadiums week in week out doesn't interest me, I go to Brighton games for one reason - Brighton.

100% yes! I have never seen the Albion in the top flight so it would be a dream come true to see us travel to the likes of Old Trafford and Anfield. One can dream though....

I've got plenty of sympathy for that point of view. Anyone who doesn't believe Brighton as a club would change beyond recognition if we got to the Prem is simply deluding themselves, and some of the community feel would be lost.

But then you say you go to see Brighton - wouldn't you rather see the Albion run out at Old Trafford than Whaddon Road?

It's a trickier one for me than some are suggesting on this thread. You strive to win games, get up the table, get promotions and ultimately aspire to the Premier League. Yet the moment you get there, something is lost as many thousands of fans of clubs like Leicester, Southampton etc would testify. The atmosphere had died at those clubs long before they got relegated.

I think Brighton maybe the wrong team for you then, I would suggest a nice steady team to support like Rochdale, who, at this rate will take about 100 years+ to get anywhere near the premiership.

May I ask why Brighton is the wrong team if I do not want to see them in the preimership. Are you somehow insinuating that Brighton will be promoted there in the foreseeable future (less than 100 years)... well then I think you my friend have got the wrong team.

I've got the wrong team because I don't want to see them lose? Yes, that would be right. I'm saying you have the wrong team because you specifically want Brighton to lose games just so we don't play in the Premiership which is just crazy really.

When, in any of my posts, have I said I want us to lose games? I don't recall I did or would say that as that is ludicrous.

You don't have to agree with what I'm saying, but you don't need to suggest I 'have the wrong team' because I wouldn't really like to see the Albion in the premiership. Tooting Gull was quite right in his post, it's a trickier decision than people suggest which it is, people think fantastic grounds, great players it will be excellent!!! All I'm doing is stating the other side of the argument by saying going to the premiership has many, many downfalls.

I just got the feeling that if you didn't want us in the Premiership (which you said) that came hand in hand with us having to lose games to not go any higher than the Championship. No offense intended, it was just my personal opinion that's all.
And to the quote in bold, likewise.

I wonder what your average Derby fan thought a year ago and whether their opinion has changed now. Compared to BHA, Derby are a bigger club, yet failed dismally. I don't care what league you are in, getting thrashed each week and having a record low points total is embarrassing and unpleasant. However they really didn't spend very much when they went up, so possibly for the next couple of years they will be in a stronger financial position, though didn't they already have pretty large debts before promotion so maybe the extra money will just save them, rather than make them a better team.

The problem for most small teams getting into the Prem is whether to splash out on long term contracts for players who can keep you up, or just take the money and hope for the best. There are plenty of clubs like Southampton, who've got it wrong and in spite of all the money they've had, are close to going bust. It's very easy for most of the £60m to be spent on players wages, with no long term benefit to the club.

On balance, I'd say yes to promotion to the prem, as long as the clubs long term future was secure.

The £60 million would go a long way to making the long term future secure, as would any "parachute" payment we might recieve if we did get relegated straight away.

As conkers said it would be nice for the younger fans to see us play the top teams in the country

No, I think a lot of us share that same view; "To travel hopefully is better than to arrive" as the saying goes. However what's the alternative? Always to lose the play-off final at Wembley? To my mind never making the Prem would be worse than getting there and getting thumped each week.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Derby next season. I think a lot of people think they've been deeply scarred by this season and don't want us to suffer the same fate.

This is a thread about whether or not you would like to see the Albion in the premiership. You're saying it as though we would actually be in countless finals and we would want to lose these games to avoid it. We're not there abouts or anywhere near, who knows whether we'd get to the playoffs or even to Wembley let alone win there. If we did get to Wembley and went up, of course it would be fantastic, but this is purely would you like to see us in the premiership full stop.

I completely agree with what your saying, players at that level get far too much money and are very greedy. I also think that the communty would be left out after the money men invested in us.

I would still go and watch the albion, clearly, but I would not enjoy seeing over-rated over-payed players thrashing us every week. I know people are saying derby was a worst case scenario , but I could see it happening to us

Actually I wasn't saying that at all; I was asking if that was the limit of your ambitions. It was more a rhetorical question; if you don't want us to play in the Premiership then by definition the highest you ever want to see us is as losing play-off finalists.

However you then say say that to go up to the Prem 'would be fantastic'. I agree. So like me you DO want to see us play in the Premiership.

Edit: Also in my original post I wasn't really addressing you, but Tooting.
