Idiots and know nothings! They even use as an example 'Why do I have to have Mr on my debit card?' The answer of course is to assist in fraud prevention. If a woman presents a card with Mr on it, it probably isn't her card!

I use my wifes card all the time, no one ever says anything. I am all for people not wanting to be called mr or mrs, go for your f***ing lives. But i don't really give a shit so why make me change?

This is the political correct brigade gone mad! (Oh come on someone had to say it).

The truth of this is that it will go no further than the idea stage and has probably been massively misquoted to turn it into sensationalist claptrap anyway.

Don't chuck your toys out of your prams quite yet people......stay calm, we can get through this.

Why does my Barclaycard just have my initials and surname on it? I can't see what the issue is. The only card-based fraud that I have been a victim of was when my debit card numbers were used. "Mr", "Mrs" or "Ms" didn't save me.

One thing that the Council's report does flag up is the fact that transgender people are subject to discrimination and hostility from large numbers of people. This thread seems to confirm that. As an employer of transgender people and a provider of services to transgender people, it's surely right that the Council should ask itself what the issues are and how they might be dealt with.

The most curious thing..
Never saw the point of putting titles on forms other than to let Dr's, Sir's and Lord's show off.

Agree about the discrimination and transgenderphobia - see most posts above.

It's a legacy thing from when cards where set to match the chequebooks then later evolved in to debit cards that were checked with signatures and names. One they became chip and pin nobody looked at them any more and the Mr didn't need to be there but in many cases remained from the original database. Nonetheless still appropriate if cashing or changing records in the bank.

Citizens of Brighton and Hove may no longer be called Mr or Mrs under new plans.

All titles could be scrapped from official council forms and paperwork after transgender activists complained the names forced people to choose between genders.

The proposal, which has the backing of Brighton and Hove City Council’s deputy leader Phelim MacCafferty, has been branded “utterly ludicrous” by an opposition councillor.
It comes following an investigation by the council into the lives of the transgender community in the city.

The scrutiny panel is set to put forward a number of recommendations, including the scrapping of Mr and Mrs, to the council for approval in December.
He said: “Trans people aren’t necessarily male or female and sometimes they don’t want to be defined by their gender.

Steph Scott, an LGBT activist who defines herself as ‘genderqueer’ – neither male nor female – described the titles Mr and Mrs as “extremely outdated”.

She said: “Being called Mr or Mrs forces me to choose between genders.
“It’s assuming people live in a binary world where you’re either one thing or another and it pigeonholes people.

“I think it’s a good idea to expand across the city because it’s about getting people to be aware that gender isn’t just male or female.”

The activist said Brighton and Hove City Council had already started addressing people by the gender-neutral title 'Mx' on their tax forms.

How would you like to be addressed?

If I ever get a letter addressing me as Mx it will be sent back unopened with the words NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS across the envelope. I don't care if you are transgender, no gender, got four tits and spatula where your cock used to be you ain't dictating to me how I'm addressed. It's your choice if you want to go and get your junk chopped off or you want your vag rolled into a hampton, I'd never dream of crtitising you you crazy bastards, so afford me the same courtesy and keep the f*** out of my business.

It's not that simple anyway is it!?

You're only a Mrs if your married, your a Miss before, a Ms if you're not sure if married or not, or if divorced or widowed, Dr if you have the qualifications (gender neutral anyway)...

Plenty of room for a few more!!

Oh dear, simply make the title optional if it's that bigger deal. What a waste of time and money.

It's not as if forms ask for gender, they are asking for title, if you want one or have one tick a box, if not don't ... Sherlock.

When a form does ask for gender, make that optional or add an extra appropriate option like "transgender" as used earlier.

XX or XY? Seems pretty binary to me.

I think the whole adversarial political system is flawed, as it creates conflict (hence the name) and cheap point-scoring wars, from local councils upwards, meaning sweet FA gets done. It's the old divide and rule ethos where we are all moaning about something as trivial as this, rather than looking at the larger inequalities going on nationally and globally...

Do titles matter that much ???

I think the activist needs to look at what gender means in the dictionary:

2 the state of being male or female (chiefly in cultural or social contexts).

Yep. It's trivial. But the Argus has chosen to highlight just one small item in a much longer Council report that deals with a range of more serious issues that fall within the spectrum of the "larger inequalities" that are what you are saying should be looked at.

Typical of our local journalism, I'm afraid.
