Worthing pubs

Never been in Worthing pub but that price list has recalled my memories of 1959 when I spent a lot of time in the Grenadier at Hangleton as a spotty 18 year old. A pint for under a couple of bob (Shilling or 10 pence today). Marvellous as I was earning £5 a week. Pork Chops at 4/6 were a real treat in our family. Wonderful nostalgia.

Worthing pubs are very poor .For it's size Shoreham has a great variety.

Although with the closure of The Jolly Brewers, one could argue the average quality has just improved...

Was boarded up when I drove past the other day. Only the Cobden left on that road now.

It is. There's a local campaign to have the land given to Heene school, as they have no space. Chances are though it'll be flats...

The flats next door were built on land that was originally allotments next to the Jollies.

I am a bit disappointed that my dad doesn't seem to be on there. I know he used the Clifton and the George and Dragon back then, maybe it was a George and Dragon phase for him.

Some fine old local families on there. Didn't the Mant, Harris and Treagus families live in the same road as you BG. I think the Richardson, Dewey and Lodge families lived in Clifton road and Anglesea street until the slum clearances of the 60s and 70s when they were moved out to the posh new council houses in Maybridge. It would have been the first time they had ever known the luxury of bathrooms and indoor loos!!

Ha a certain member of the Davie family used to use the pockets on the pool table in the Clifton as an inside loo.

No you are right,like everywhere but for its size Shoreham must have about 18 whereas somewhere like Southwick has 4.

If I remember rightly, there were 26 in the late 70's early 80's.....I drank in most of them at one point or another.

Agreed, but this thread isn't about who's got the best pubs it's about a slice of modern local history.
