For six months or so I've been (not that actively) working on a Youtube playlist with songs that more or less everyone has heard, for good or bad.

One day of listening to all Billboard 100 hits from 1994, I ran into "Life" by Des'ree, I song I had heard as a kid but only remembered the chorus. I could only listen for about fifteen seconds before I had to stop the song because of its "wtf" first verse.

I'm afraid of the dark,
Especially when I'm in a park
And there's no-one else around,
Oh, I get the shivers
I don't want to see a ghost,
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news

You can see the equally meaningless video here:

... that said, I sort of enjoyed how bad it was, and I know you got more. Bring it.

"People stare and cross the road from me
And jungle drums they all clear the way for me
Can you read my mind, can you see in the snow
And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door
Don't say you're easy on me, you're about as easy as a nuclear war"

The dull part of the south coast
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark

The sweet green icing is flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain

And I don’t think I can take it anymore . . .

WTF is that all about??!!

Come on these are GREAT lyrics

Spring was never waiting for us, dear
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no
I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground beneath your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long…

"The Look" by Roxette (RIP)

Catchy song but WTF are the lyrics

One, two, three, four walking like a man
Hitting like a hammer
She's a juvenile scam
Never was a quitter
Tasty like a raindrop
She's got the look
Heavenly bound
Cause heaven's got a number
When she's spinning me around
Kissing is a color
Her loving is a wild dog
She's got the look
She's got the look (She's got the look) She's got the look (She's got the look)
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue
When everything I'll ever do I'll do for you
And I go la la la la la she's got the look
Fire in the ice
Naked to the t-bone
Is a lover's disguise
Banging on the head drum
Shaking like a mad bull
She's got the look
Swaying to the band
Moving like a hammer
She's a miracle man
Loving is the ocean
Kissing is the wet sand
She's got the look
She's got the look…

Italian Girls Rod Stewart!

At the Turin Motor Show
I was dreaming of a mobile that couldn't be mine
Not without lyin'
Was I feeling kind a silly
When I stepped in soakin' beer down the cola machine
Oh, stayin' seventeen
Well she claimed she was a killer
And she owned a floodlit villa
A little aways from the main highway
Oh, take me way down yonder, woo
She was tall, thin and tarty
And she drove a Maserati
Faster than sound
I was heaven bound
Although I must have looked a creep
In my army surplus Jeep
Was I being too bold
Before the night could get old
No, no, no, no, no
She proved me so wrong
Oh the Italian girls sometimes hold their religious habits
In front of your eyes, just to get you tied
Ah, but not my little Bella 'cause I did not have to tell her
That I'd be gone, with the morning sun
She made me so tired, woo
She took me way, way, away down yonder
Then I was gone with the morning sun on my back, woo
Gotta get on back there soon as I can
Take me there
And I miss the girl so bad
Oh yeah, wait a minute
She broke my heart
She broke my heart
She broke my heart, woo
Gotta get on back there soon as I can
I miss the girl, I miss the girl, I miss the girl so bad
I was a lot better off

Before saying anything else, I should say that I love this song. It makes such a joyous sound that I'm happy to forgive it's lyrics.

It was co-written by Miracles Bobby Rogers and Smokey Robinson. Yes, that Smokey Robinson. The one who wrote My Guy and My Girl and Tracks of My Tears and Get Ready and I Second That Emotion and Tears of a blinking Clown. I don't know which of the co-writers was responsible for the words, but let's just say that if it was Smokey, he went on to do better work. I don't think that anyone would believe the old story of Dylan describing him as 'America's Greatest Living Poet' on the strength of these words.

It has an ABAB rhyme scheme. If you don't know the song too well, you can play a game by pausing before the second 'B' line and trying to guess what rhyme Bobby & Smokey opted for: Your guesses will generally be better choices than they made.

As the comment below the video says, the line after 'The way you stole my heart' in the second verse is 'You could have been a cool crook', not 'Cupid'.

Still love that song though...

Two from the 70s that I always thought were a bit trite

George Harrison - Bangladesh

Bangla Desh, Bangla Desh
Where so many people are dying fast
And it sure looks like a mess
I've never seen such distress

and America - Horse with No Name

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings

And, as much as I love him (and TMR is my favourite album of all time) Captain Beefheart's Dachau Blues is not one to be remembered

Dachau Blues
The poor Jews
Died in an oven back in World War 2

This is very hard to beat, yet it is a cracking track. Ironically, it is called P Machinery and despite emanating from der fatherland, the second line of the first verse it has nothing to do with German Liquids :lolol:

On joyless lanes we walk in lines
A calm but steady flow
Accompanied by loud commands
Our strength is running low
