Scary bit from Wikipedia:

"On March 16, 2007, a "Geoff Thomas Foundation Charity XI" took on a team on celebrities in the first ever match at the new Wembley Stadium, with Mark Bright and Simon Jordan scoring the goals in a 2-0 win." :thud:

You failed to mention the other bits in that article

After a year in retirement the footballing world was shocked in June 2003 when Thomas revealed he had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia,[1] from which he later recovered. He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award in 2005 after he raised over £150,000 for the Leukaemia Research charity by cycling 2,200 miles in 21 days, completing the route of all 21 stages of the 2005 Tour de France a few days ahead of the race itself.[2]

On April 6, 2006, the players from the 1990 final all took part in a re-run of the match, in aid of Leukemia Research, at Selhurst Park. Manchester United won the game, 3-1 including goals from Neil Webb (2), Ian Wright and Mark Robins.

On March 16, 2007, a "Geoff Thomas Foundation Charity XI" took on a team on celebrities in the first ever match at the new Wembley Stadium, with Mark Bright and Simon Jordan scoring the goals in a 2-0 win, and three days later, a Palace team similar to the one of the previous year took on a Liverpool team of the time, a re-run of the epic semi-final game that saw Palace win 4-3 in extra-time. The re-run again took place at Selhurst Park, and this time finished 1-1 with Phil Babb opening the scoring and Bright scoring for the second time in three days to level things up.

At present, Geoff is in the process of establishing "The Geoff Thomas Foundation", a charity that will raise funds for the treatment of cancer.

Top f***ing geezer in my opinion

At the risk of being contraversial for the sake of it.

Shortest England career
Peter Ward, six minutes, May 31, 1980 v Australia - Sydney Cricket ground[3] featured as a substitute in this game against Australia, introduced in the 85th minute. The game ended six minutes later, and Ward was not recalled

John Barnes.

Cliche I know, but true that he built a whole international career off of one quality goal against Brazil.

Eh? John Barnes was the best player in our top flight at the time. England didn't play to his strengths. Sometimes they did - i.e. when he came on as a sub against Argentina in '86 and he absolutely DESTROYED them (only for Linekar to miss a sitter). Glenn Hoddle didn't always do it for England. That didn't make him the worst player ever to play for England.

England didn't play to his strengths !!!!! ? And what exactly were his strengths ?good club player but SHIT international ?

Do you mean he came on as a sub in the '86th minute and destroyed Argentina for 4 whole minutes ? ;)

Suppose it was that disgusting red shirt he wore for most of his club career that's tainted my opinion of him. Still think he was useless for England though, bar the wonder goal.

francis jeffers only played one game for england, in which he scored, so to call him the worst ever is a tad harsh

he was a decent player, just unlucky with injuries and what was ultimately a poor career move when he joined arsenal

John Barnes.

What a stupid comment. This thread isn't for nominations to 'most disappointing player in an England shirt', or 'biggest apparent difference in performances between club and international matches'.

'one quality goal' automatically places him ahead of a whole raft of other players, many of whom are listed on here. Are you genuinely of the opinion that Carlton Palmer was a better player than John Barnes?

Did Glenn McGoldrick ever get picked for England? Along with Francis Benali he was the worst player I ever saw play.

Ever.

Without taking us too far off topic - to be fair to Linekar he didnt miss a sitter; he would have had a tap-in but for an UNBELIEVEABLE headed clearance off the line by one of the Argentinian defenders.

This team would struggle to beat San Marino

GK Scott Carson (off the back of his Croatia performance, I haven’t seen any worse in an England Shirt, Not disputing there are worse keepers who have probably played such as Dave Beasant)
LB Keith Curle (worst ever outfield performance I’ve seen in Euro 92)
CB Earl Barrett
CB Terry Fenwick
RB Warren Barton
MID Geoff Thomas
MID Carlton Palmer Can’t remember who said it ‘’He covers every blade of grass on a football pitch’’ ‘’That’s because his first touch is so crap’’
MID Andy Sinton
MID Steve Guppy
FOR Michael Ricketts
FOR David White*

* to be replaced with Ian Ormondroyd if he ever got capped.

As well as waltzing through the Brazilian defence in Brazil, he also scored a 25 yard freekick against the Dutch.

Yeah, he's right up there with Carlton Palmer.
