Would cost allot to upgrade them agreed, I just assumed new prisons would be made like that. It is only a grounded metal mesh after all.

I wouldn't know but would this not interfere with the authorities communications? Also there are besides The Wormwood Scrubs type prison lots more C & D cat prisons where this would prove almost impossible surely.

There is another issue which I don't know if it was covered & I am sure if it was there would have been someone posting on the subject but approx a third of the prison population are actually in for sexual offences but have their tracks covered by the prison authorities due to the general mayhem that would ensue should everybodies true offences be exposed. I believe that there is a lot of truth in this.
Yes I have been to prison but I would do the same again & am not ashamed of any actions I committed which lead to my incarcerations, except getting caught! How many people in truth but for the grace of God could have ended up in jail for something that they have done sometime in their life? That's another debate/thread. Probably not the best place to start admitting to past misdemeanors either!

I think therein lies the problem with our prison system....does this not translate as your punishment was not enough to deter you again? If so then surely the punishment should be worsened.....or made more of a horrible experience or whatever.

You can broadcast inside a faraday cage....just not through it using EM radiation (depending on the wavelength and mesh hole sizes etc).
Some rudeboy gave his mum a slap and he dealt with it, is there any punishment that would make you standby without doing anything in that situation ?

Only grounded metal mesh that needs to surround the whole prison, rather a large undertaking. Most of the prisons in this country were built before they had mains electricity.

Thank you. Do the same every time. It's just funny when the aggressors have the tables turned & they become the victims, they aren't so big then. She was just actually outside her own house sweeping the street & when she didn't jump out of their way - there were 2 & in their late 20's early 30's so it's not like they were kids but so called "yardies" so 1 pushed her out of the way & when she stuck up for herself the other one slapped her. ( She did see what car they had got out of & promptly bricked it though!) Anyway they were banging her door down when I came around the corner so that was that.
If somebody believes& really believes they were right in their actions then there is no "punishment" that changes that. The other time was for a bit of weed, a big bit admittedly. As I said I have no shame in what I ended up there for & still smoke weed, although only occasionally now & will always battle anyone who takes a liberty with my mother, or anyone elses mother come to that.

Oh anyway, I'm going to work now because just because I did go in there I still have a use to society.

The unfortunate thing with the penal system in this country is that it is a breeding ground for career criminal because many of them have no true self & become indoctrinated into that social group / lifestyle whilst they are in there. There are lots of other things wrong with it but people who think they need to make prison worse to make people not want to go back will in fact just make the people worse not the prisons.

How very simple it is! Some people are not as clever as you and I. We are fortunate that we can form a cogent plan in our minds and take control of our own destinies. Not everyone can. The mentally ill for example. And some criminals.

when you have trained as a prison officer it never allows for you being put in "D" wing at the Scrubs on nights walking round the "4s" where you read the cards 25 years,15 years life X4,
it does I might tell you make you very apprehensive of going in there on days, but I did and until you have been in there mixing with the "cons" and seeing how they manage to live out their sentences you cannot comment on how they should or should not be treated.
Herbicide is right I felt for this lad he made one mistake and was paying for it dearly.
things don't look like they have changed much in the 40 or so years since I served there, apart from the kit they where when going into a cell and women officers( the blond girl I could have hugged she really was the one with the right attitude).

one or two other things I learned while a prison officer is just have a little humility and remember there but for the grace of god and the other thing (sorry about this you boys in blue) after doing many solicitors and police visits never ever trust either of them.

the prison service is a good career if you like the comradeship, but if you have any bullying tendencies its not for you

The major change is in the regime. Every prison as you know has it's own regime & although dictated to by the Home Office every single prison is very different. The old regime in WS was one of the most oppressive & it ended only when they beat a prisoner almost to death (& that's not to say they hadn't got away with it previously) resulting in an investigation that forced many of the responsible bullying PO's to resign or in one case flee the country along with some ending up in court themselves. ( Didn't some end up in prison? somewhat ironic! ) Wandsworth is notorious for having a hardline regime & everyone within the system wants to avoid being shipped out to there although WS these days is actually a bit of a model prison with a pretty fair team running the place. Things have changed since 91 a hell of a lot. Anyway I am actually late for work, you see Prison does work, I'm rehabilitated!!!!!

Wormwood Scrubs is actually 4 different prisons which now have obviously from the programme changed after leaving WS I went to Shrewsbury prison which was termed as a local and then on the Chelmsford which again had 4 wings and mostly took the overflow from the London prisons where there were two huge riots in which the prisoners were sympathetic to the amount of hours we had to work.
I take your point and scum is scum wherever to comes from just because you are serving a sentence for whatever does not mean you are scum and on the other hand just because you have some authority and wear a uniform does not mean you are a saint.
