In addition to the above: Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash) - still touring and you can see him usually in Worthing a couple of times each year. Age 70+ ( as are most of them) but still a great level of energy.

I went to see Peter Hook and The Lights recently and noticed he didn’t/couldn’t play a single note while he was singing, the lad playing the computer took over. So a special mention to those who can play AND sing lead at the same time (sorry Sid).

Singing and playing bass ATM the same time is difficult, not many people can do both freely. If you listen to the Police for example, the bass lines are pretty basic when sting sings. Some of our songs are hard, I had to master my bass lines to the point I can do them in my sleep, then get onto the singing bit.

This is a good example.

I have one of their LPs from back in the 70s. Doubt if I've played it more than two or three times - I'm only hanging on to the bloody thing in case one day it makes me a fortune in a record rarities auction!

They only did two albums, '67/68 a live album was released in 1991, which is superb. Originals on vinyl are scarce here, and do have some value, but not mortgage money unfortunately.

Bruce Foxton is a good solid bass player. But not top ten material. I don't think Peter Hook would make my Top 100.

Donald Duck Dunn. Legend.

JJB may not be lauded as one of the greats but for me just has to be included for that legendary tone that just worked so well with Dave Greenfield's rippling keyboards.

Have we had John McVie on this thread? I am not expecting to see Mick Fleetwood on the best drummer thread though.

Loved Lemmy though, listen to Orgone Accumulator on Hawkwind Space Ritual Album to hear a Bass being played as a rhythm guitar, astonishing...

I love his bass-playing on the live version of Lord of Light, on Space Ritual - which remains probably my fave live album.
