Gilmour.

You don't really need anyone else, tbh.

Whilst not at the very top of the tree, these make my spine tingle (especially the thumping bass)

Add the metronomic drummer and Bob's yer uncle.

Very good point - there's no point in being technically brilliant if you don't produce an end product which interests and excites the listener. There are loads of guitarists out there who can whack out lightning solos, hundreds of notes per minute, but all of the 'heard one, heard 'em all' variety.

FFS what a load of Mojo subscribing tosh... Let's sit round a coffee table and see who can pull out the most obscure guitarist of all time, next people will be telling me Bill Bruford was actually a brilliant guitartist! ooooohhhh lets get all eclectic and ignore the greatest electric guitarist of them all... and why? Ohh he was a bit difficult to work with... oh he wrote Smoke on the Water... Bollocks Beethoven essentially wrote Smoke, so, if you're looking for someone to blame, well then blame Ludwig.

No, No, No:

I have to say my late and sadly missed friend Dan Woods. Brilliant, brilliant guitarist and streets ahead of any of the names listed on this thread.

Out of the famous ones I'd nominate Martin Barre. And having seen the stunning Steve Hackett concert at the Dome on Tuesday - him as well.

Same here, for me I’ve no interest in who’s the alleged best technician, I have to love the music.

Johnny Marr
George Harrison
Mike Oldfield
Mark Knopfler (not into most of their music, but the bloke’s a genius with a guitar, beautiful sounds)
Steve Stevens (Billy Idol’s band)
Pete Townshend
Robert Smith

Bassists:
Peter Hook
John Entwistle
Simon Gallup (The Cure)

I can't believe it took 5 pages for someone to mention Alex Lifeson of Rush!

La Villa Strangiato has been my favourite guitar instrumental for nigh on 40 years, the solos in 'Red Barchetta' and 'Between the Wheels' are two of my top 5 rock guitar solos of all-time.

Jimmy Page has to be right up there too.
