Hmmm - bit of an own goal there. Following the Jackass vid there is a comparison between the Common Snapping Turtle and the Alligator Snapping Turtle which says that the Common ST is the much more aggressive of the two. Smaller, faster and feistier - sounds like the Common ST should be in the competition and that the Alligator ST is basically a pussy hiding inside a bad-ass looking shell.
Good point which I'm glad you've raised. For me it comes down to the definition of 'hardness'. Correctly, you point out that the CST is small and snappy and feisty as you put it, but that's like comparing a Jack Russel to a Rottweiler. The alligator Snapper can live for up to 200 years and grow to over 100kg which makes it a different kind of hard, though admittedly it's unlikely to scamper around like a honey badger this behemoth doesn't need to - nothing would ever take it on, it's way too hard. But, if any thing made of meat is stupid enough to get close the AST simply rips it to shreds - alligator - jaguar - porcupine - badger shredded , no dispute.
There are living examples of ASTs who have been found with civil war musket balls embedded in their shells - not only did they survive being shot by a mussle loader, they lived on for 200 years - not giving a f***!
