agree that a strong climate based argument for reducing meat, rather than the blanket cut all meat.

Agreed - you're never going to convince everyone to go vegan, but if we can convince the majority of the population to eat less meat, and when they do then only buy it locally sourced, then we'd be making good progress.

The problem is how we do that. Most options just end up disadvantaging the poor.

COmpletely agree. If there is a possible positive to Brexit, we will have to produce more locally/at home, and won't be allowed, or be able to afford to travel, so that's all good for the environment, just not necessarily good for the poor majority. The 1920's if you like.

At least we'll get good Sussex lamb instead of frozen crap from New Zeland, whoever the **** came up with an idea like that needed shooting on the spot, the same can be said for apples from Chile or ZA. Absolute madness.

The joke is that vegans never shut up about being vegan yet, here we are, in the midst of a discussion about World Vegan Day where the majority of posts are from meat eaters making the same tired jokes, who can’t wait to tell you that they had a full English or a steak.

Anyway, more power to you for reducing your meat consumption

Funny how you replied to my vegan joke post though and not the others that mentioned eating full English and steak, or the meat eaters just making snide comments.
I did notice the proper vegan at the beginning of the thread did give me a thumbs up and obviously didn’t take offence at a very light hearted joke.

I also mentioned in my next post I don’t eat meat, I actually also eat vegan meals as being a vegetarian we have been forgotten about in restaurants IMO. The vegetarian options are now vegan options as being vegan seems fashionable.

Yours was merely the first joke I saw on the thread thus my reply. It was really nothing personal, just an observation at how the joke is juxtaposed to how the thread was unfolding. And, to reassure you, I wasn’t offended in the slightest

And re options at restaurants, as a vegetarian you can eat vegan food however a vegan can’t eat vegetarian food. It caters to more people I suppose

The idea that eating locally sourced meat is better for the environment relies on the incorrect notion that transportation is the main, or a significant contributing factor to environmental damage. This isn’t the case and people, generally, vastly underestimate the emissions involved in the production stage of meat. A study lead by Oxford university found that transportation of food accounts for less than 10% of carbon emissions in the global food supply. It’s dwarfed by emissions related to changes in land use, such as deforestation, as well as farm-related emissions, notably the release of methane. The study concluded that it’s what you eat, not where it comes from, that really has an impact. Food (no pun intended) for thought.

completely serious. please point out the flaw in the carbon cycle posted, where does the positive carbon output come from? i have read papers on meat contribution to GHG, effectively write off CO2 emission because of the cycle, focuses on the CH4 as longer lasting. still a shorter time cycle than established carbon offsetting schemes, plant a wood to sequester away a car's production emissions and such. and thats before we get into pork and poultry with negligable CH4 output, or european farming practice vs american. the science gets manipulated with post-farm emissions, non-uniform practices, double counting, not discounting absorption to present a picture that is not accurate
