How come Qatar are in pot 1? They are ranked 51st in the world and below every other country who have qualified.

The host team is always in Pot 1.


Japan and South Korea were both in Pot 1 when they shared the hosting of the World Cup in 2002.

Japan were ranked 32nd then, South Korea were 40th. Only Senegal (42nd) and China (50th) were lower.


In 2010, hosts South Africa were then ranked 83rd in the World and placed in Pot 1.

Only North Korea ranked 105 was lower.

This for me too. Was appalled at the time, and still am. Will likely be boycotting out of principal. Shameful dark episode in the games history, as it was 4 years ago.

Wonder how many fans that went to Russia are now regretting putting money in Putins pocket? People found excuses to navigate such challenges at the time, including friends of mine. Really though its shameful, you are complicit if you turn a blind eye. Putin was a monster back then if you cared to look. But people don’t care, including so many of the “heroes” now desperately trying to tell everyone how much they care and are helping Ukraine. It makes me sick how many people have such short memories and double standards when it comes to football and self-integrity, values etc. Seems to go out the window for far too many if a footballs being kicked. Chelsea fans for example. A soviet gangster bankrolling your club, and you didn’t ask any questions? Yeah right…
