Just seen actor Robert Bathurst on Good Morning Britain.

At the end of the show, Richard Madeley asked him why he was supporting Ecuador in the World Cup.

He said there were 3 great reasons, but he was worried that if they played too well, they'd be sold to Chelsea!

Well worth watching on ITV+1 in an hour's time.

It seems like we're asking for consistency as much in VAR now as we used to do with referees.

Just as a point of order, VAR didn't overturn anything. (The) VAR (ref) asked the on-field ref to review the incident to see if he wished to change his decision, and it was him who overturned the original decision (if he even saw it in the first place).

But, yes, the different outcomes from two very similar incidents is poor.

However, it may be the case that today's penalty was a direct result of yesterday's not being given, and referees have been reminded of FIFA's directive to be firm on set piece man-handling. If so, this could work in England's favour over the course of the tournament, given our prowess in the air from corners.

Both the penalty given against us and the one just given to Argentina were fouls by the defender without suspicion of a foul by the attacker. The Maguire incident ended with the defender's arms around him, but began with Maguire with his arms around the defender's shoulders. When reviewing the decision not to give a penalty, the remote ref would have considered whether there was a foul on Maguire, but also who fouled who first. As the latter wasn't clear, he didn't have reason to say that a clear and obvious error had been made. The BBC coverage was poor, concentrated on the outrage of us not getting a decision in our favour and didn't mention Maguire's use of his arms at all.

Funny how they remembered when Iran got a much softer penalty in the very same match.
