Spain still look class despite losing. The Dutch also looked great in the way they controlled their game, but Argentina have probably been the pick of the teams, with South Korea and Switzerland being the surprise teams who could go further than expected.

I think a lot of teams have yet to cope with the ball, overhitting so many passes, free kicks etc. Germany used it in training & they were the only team who dealt with it. The next round of games will have to be a lot better & perhaps players will get more used to the flight of the ball.

Been utterly dissapointed with the whole lot myself. Neat passing & tight defending is all well & good but this is the world cup & we want goals

and Germany?? not been any great performances yet......when you look at how some other top teams have played, maybe Englands result wasnt too bad.

In terms of learning something new - well impressed with Chile today.

Germany used the ball in their football season this year to get used to it, FIFA offered it to every countries national league this season........premier league turned it down because of a deal with Umbro.....have to use an Umbro ball.

as 10cc say, not in hove
looking at the pre-tournament favourites, this first round has certainly not panned out as planned.

france were terrible
brazil were average against a team of nobodies
spain lost. could be facing brazil now in round 2. excellent
germany played an appalling australia and did ok (against 10 men. and remember that cahill looked completely disinterested before he was off)
holland played well enough
argentina were good enough
italy were poor and aged
portugal should have lost to a decent ivory coast
and we failed to beat a decent american side.

all in all....all to play for

Germany: quite good
Brazil: good but fallable
Holland: played poorly and won easily
Argentina: exciting with good players, but I don't trust their Manager to get it right
Paraguay: hard to beat
Algeria: best defence , but everything else went wrong, especially their keeper
England: completely baffled
Chile: looked better than England
Spain: looked better than England
USA: mugged England
Slovenia: terrible side and they won
Greece: worst side
Ghana: looked a bit handy
Ivory Coast: looked a bit handy

I missed the France v Uruguay game, luckily.

I don't know. My ears are still ringing.

Far from being the 'worst world cup ever' I think this could be the 'most open world cup ever'. At this stage in 2006 we were all raving about Argentina, this time there isn't one stand-out team. Yes obviously some are better than others, but some may have been flattered by the unexpected weakness of the opposition and conversely we may be dismissing some because their opponents were stronger than expected.

I still maintain that we (England ) could beat any one of these sides in a one-off game - and we could be beaten by any. Which way's it gonna go?

Very harsh on the Germans, that.
You can only beat what's in front of you and Germany created loads of chances. They played a high tempo game from the off and looked really good against 11 men as well as 10.

what i think is, if we can sort out a decent game plan and stick to it, have discipline and focus, have confidence and belief in ability, England can get to the Finals. nothing i've seen is unbeatable.
